Programs: Public health education-provided web-based instruction on new school vision screening standards, provided online nc vision resource guide to health care providers and individuals seeking vision care assistance, provided educational materials to over 39,000 preschool families and 3,243 vision screening workshop participants, distributed materials to primary care physicians and pediatricians concerning early childhood vision care upon request.
community services-photoscreened 33,186 preschool aged children, including headstart and nc pre-k programs at 642 child care centers. Provided vision screening services to 6,333 adults at 36 screening sites convenient to them. Provided follow-up services to all preschoolers and adults referred for potential vision problems. Operated vision service plan, donor docs, and healthy eyes voucher programs, providing free eye glasses and/or eye exams to 3,417 referred individuals.
professional education & training-provided 226 best practice workshops for volunteers, including 71 for nurses in-service. Trained a total of 3,243 volunteers and nurses.
research-worked with universities and statewide health organizations to determine best methods to screen children, including children with special needs. Worked closely with the state's early children vision care program to survey and research compliance with vision requirements; worked closely with vision research corp to track incidence and prevalence of preschool eye problems in north carolina.
