Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals

Mission: Founded in 2014, Pound Hounds ResQ is an all-volunteer based 501(c)3 animal welfare non-profit, committed to supporting animal rescue in our own backyard of New York City and the tri-state area (PA included). Our mission is rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming dogs that come through theses shelters, with a focus on Pit Bulls. We have several initiatives that help us in our endeavors such as pet adoption events that bring about public awareness and education about animal welfare. The PHR program consists of behavioral training, obedience training, and vetting to get these dogs in adoptable condition. PHR saves hundreds of dogs every year that otherwise would have been euthanized either for lack of space and/or lack of veterinary care at the NYC Shelter System. OUR PHILOSOPHY Pound Hounds Res-Q believes that every animal deserves a loving home. How that happens takes lots of work. We try to pair the animal with the best possible foster or adopter home available. We take into consideration the initial behavior evaluation and volunteer evaluation. We also consider the animal's environment at the shelter. It's not science, but it helps us pair us with the best possible pets/people. Furthermore, we then look at family dynamics. Are they active, are they quiet, etc? This gives us a better perspective of what animals would be right for them and their lifestyle. We look at the total environment, kids, other pets, etc. It's not perfect, but it helps enormously in placing every animal with the right family. It's truly a challenge, but it's something that we don't take lightly. It's a big effort but so rewarding in the long run. We do not have a facility but rather rely on a network of committed loving foster homes that see these animals through to adoption. It is a selfless act and every single one of our fosters helps us save another precious life.

Do not use this rescue. Donna is horrid and terrible to her foster parents. She also cuts corners when it comes to vet costs. She's probably going to bad mouth me, but I'm going to tell my story anyway.

They were the first organization I fostered with. I don't feel like I received any help from Donna. There was a point when I contacted her multiple times about a medical issue with my foster dog and it took her a week to get back to me because she went to Italy and did not communicate that. I've heard from other fosters of hers and seen in reviews that she has done this multiple times and may be using funds from the rescue to fund her trips to Italy. She then told me I didn't have to bring her to the vet because it was probably allergies. I brought her anyway and she had an eye infection. It often seemed like she tried to cut corners to save money.

The foster dog I had attacked my dog multiple times completely unprovoked. She refused to move them saying that "people like to choose their own dogs." This is incredibly irresponsible of a rescue. I've worked with two other rescues since and they always make sure everyone in the situation is safe. She blames my dog (who is 10lbs) for the attacks, but I'm now on my 8th rescue dog without a problem.

I'm the one who scrambled and reached out to dozens of people and eventually found the place 3 hours away and spent my own money for her to live there. I eventually found a retirement home for dogs 3 hours away and spent my own money for my foster to live there. The day after she received an application for adoption. They decided to foster her instead because they were grad students and weren't sure where they would end up after graduation. I drove back up the week later to pick her up and place her with the new fosters.

This foster dog recently died. She had 4 seizures in one day and Donna told the foster not to bring her to the vet. Donna called the foster back and said to take her to the emergency vet. After 8 seizures the vet and foster decided to put her down. I cried on the phone with the foster mom. Now Donna is refusing to pay for that vet care and told the foster mom to let it go to debt collectors. The foster mom was also the person to pay for the euthanasia, not Donna.

PoundHounds rescue has assisted my husband and I am saving two amazing pups off their kill list. Both of these dogs deteriorated in the shelter and didn’t have a chance. Not only did PoundHounds rescue help us save these pups, but they helped us in training and rehabilitating them. Dog rescue is hard and most of the shelters are full. Shelter life is not ideal for any pet, but for some breeds it’s way too much. PoundHounds always steps up, and I cannot speak high enough about them. Thank you PoundHounds both Bo and Odin wouldn’t have had a chance without you.

Scrolling through Facebook one morning I came across the saddest looking white dog I had ever seen. I had no idea where he was, what his story was, what his ears looked like, or how I was going to handle 4 pets within a few months of buying my first house at 22. The only thing I did know was that Christmas was a few short days away and I had to save this poor dog. There was something I just couldn’t shake. And he was on the list to be euthanized in less than 2 hours. Donna was surprised by my age, but that didn’t stop her from discussing my life, background, vet, other pets, etc. Within an hour of that phone call, she was able to secure Pablo. I received several calls from the NYACC warning me about just how dangerous and vicious Pablo was. They couldn’t even sedate him to neuter him. I had to wait 4 very long days until they were finally able to complete the procedure. He was put into my car Sunday December 23, 2018 (my favorite Christmas present to date) still sedated from his neutering procedure. I was never once asked for my name, ID, or any information. Just the number of the dog I was there to pick up. The staff quickly put Pablo into the crate in my car, gave him his reversal, and sent us on our 3+ hour trip back home. I was genuinely questioning what in the world I had just done while trying to navigate the streets of New York.

Within minutes of getting Pablo home and into his big grass yard, I knew that I had made the absolute best decision. Donna was there for me every step of the way, which included Pablo needing multiple rounds of medicine for kennel cough, as well as my other dog who caught it as well. I had access to an entire community, trainers, and the best cheering section I could ever hope for as I got Pablo acclimated to his new life. 6 years later, to say Pablo is thriving would be an understatement. He is the most incredible, funny, loving, mischievous dog I have ever met. I have not met a human, dog, cat, chicken, goat, etc that doesn’t love him. I can’t imagine my life without him in it.

We fell in love with him and if it wasn’t for Pound Hounds, he may not have survived!! 4 years later he is a much beloved member of our family. My experience with Pound Hounds was wonders from start to finish. When Petey needed training, Donna found me a trainer immediately. My experience was so wonder that I have recommended Pound Hounds to my friend who

In 2019, I saw this dog on the at risk list in a high kill shelter in NYC. He was “rescue only” and could only be saved by an approved rescue. Thank God for Pound Hounds. I contacted them and they helped me through the process and I was able to take him home. Their help didn’t stop there. They supported me through some difficult times with him, got me a trainer and helped me work with him! Now, three years later, my boy is flourishing and it is all thanks to Pound Hounds! I will always support them!

We fostered our pup, who was on the euth list at NYC ACC, through Donna at Pound Hounds. She made sure Mason was a good fit for our home and our lifestyles before agreeing to allow us to apply. Throughout the fostering process she followed up regularly to assess our progress and to check how Mason was adjusting. Even after adopting Mason, Donna continued to check in, provide advice and make suggestions when needed. She’s been super responsive and supportive. We’ve since adopted a second dog through her and will continue to rescue through Pound Hounds

The Pound Hound team has been wonderful to work with, helping us foster two dogs from the NYC ACC who were both destined to be euthanized. The founder, Donna, made sure we were choosing not only the dogs in greatest need but also who would be most complimentary to our existing pack. It is vital to the rescue that there is harmony and these traumatized dogs are not unnecessarily bounced around.
Donna followed up on an ongoing basis and offered support where needed.
I am part of the online group of adopters/fosters and I’ve experienced countless stories of the rescue stepping in to offer medical or training support for fosters/adopters who may have been struggling.
We are thrilled to continue to work with and support this rescue.

Was trying to a rescue dog and they literally put me through hell over a heart worm pill from 25 years ago question. The person wrote me back so snidely and belittling that I would not get a pet from them if my life depended on it.
I can see why there are puppy mills because they put you through hell trying to adopt so it’s easier just to buy one.
Very sad, I would avoid this organization at all cost no matter how cute their dogs are.
Sincerely
Donna Kennedy

Pound Hounds is a great rescue group. My latest rescue, Luigi, came from Pound Hounds. He was scheduled to be killed on 7/21 at the NY ACC. Pound Hounds saved him! He’s now with me in upstate New York and shares his home with another rescue, Daffy. My only complaint is that I have very little room to sleep, as evidenced by the attached pictures.

I have loved working with this rescue.
I am a vet tech and got my start before becoming a vet tech in a shelter. So many times I wanted to foster dogs or cats who were going to be euthanized. It wasn’t part of the policy. I am so happy I can do this now with this wonderful group.

All of them have found wonderful homes, one is a foster failure (I adopted him) and one is still waiting for his home I have always experienced good communication, a special understanding that they care what happens to each dog and have felt valued as a foster...my opinion matters. I love working with Pound Hounds. I first started out looking to foster a dog 3 years ago. Donna had literally sent me the perfect dog for my family. Her and my male have bonded well and she’s great with the kids. So I adopted her. I still wanted to help all the dogs on the kill list. I have taken in 2 more fosters since then and I plan to continue to always have one foster to help contribute to the never ending kill list. Pound Hounds is great to work with provides all necessary vetting and training so we can rehabilitate these dogs to hopefully find their furever home.

I have been associated with PoundHound ResQ for several years. I have found them to be very responsive to all my questions and concerns. I like that they fully vet potential adopters/fosters so any animal they pull will be placed in a good home. If there is a problem after the animal is placed they do everything possible to resolve the problem including removing the animal. Donna Darrell responds ASAP to questions or concerns and does follow ups to make sure the animal and adopter/foster are doing well. I have gotten several dogs from them over the years and have never had a problem getting anything resolved if there are problems. I will continue to use PoundHound ResQ for as long as I continue to adopt/foster dogs.

This dog rescue organization has genuine superpowers. They are all action. They rescue as many dogs as possible from the local kill shelter, and they particularly work with pitbulls, who can be unfairly pegged and are more apt to end up in shelters in the first place. From the leadership to PHR's wide pool of volunteers, these folks are the real deal. They're caring, honest, forthright, and they want to make great matches with fosters and adopters. Donna and company patiently entertained my sob story of losing our pit bull to cancer, and our wishy washy informal search.

They patiently waited for us to decide if we would potentially channel our grief into something useful like fostering a rescue. Pound Hounds listened intently to our family dynamic, and what our environment was like; from the kids to our existing dogs to our home and landscape, they took it all into account.

A month later, an urgent dog came to light and Pound Hounds knew he was perfect for us. He arrived a week later, sight unseen, us having never met him.... And he was perfect. So perfect we knew we'd nevrler be able to let him go almost immediately.

PHR knows and cares so deeply about what they do, that they work tirelessly for not just any match, but the right match. We now simply can't imagine our lives without our foster failure, the Wonderful Mr. Butters.

He was a terrified pup, scared of his own shadow, who had a neurological condition that caused his head to tilt and for him to run in circles. It turned out Pluto had a brain tumor on his brain stem, a very hard diagnosis to swallow. Donna and the Pound Hounds community provided all the support you could imagine to me and my sweet boy. Fast forward six months, Pluto is now doing so well, he is thriving in our home and he is what we call “a regular happy dog”, no longer terrified of the world but loving his life, chewing on one hedge hog toy at a time :) Thank you Pound Hounds for saving my Pluto’s life and helping him find a place he can call his FUREVER home.

I highly recommend anyone that wants to save a life from euthanasia to contact Pound Hounds

This Group of volunteers and Donna Are literal advocate angels on earth for these dogs.. what they do Day and day out to help these beautiful babies is what gives me faith in humanity.

We fostered/ adopted our last dog from Pound Hounds and she is such a huge part of our family and we are grateful everyday. The work they put in for our girl to get her of death row and to us in Massachusetts is just overwhelmingly amazing. A Volunteer actually took the trip all the way from New York to us in a small town outside of Boston to bring our girl home. What they do is Pure love and they are Advocates for these souls that deserve to be in homes and giving a chance at life. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts
.. we will always rescue love the Vitale’s & Sky-Bird

I am fostering a dog for Pound Hounds they pulled him from a High kill shelter. This dog needed medical care and got it in a flash. They are very caring and knowledgeable what their rescue dogs need. Would recommend any day.

This amazing rescue helped the beautiful dog dynasty when she was so sick and we didn’t know she was going to make it. She was in an emergency hospital in Connecticut for days and nights. If it wasn’t for them she wouldn’t be back home with us, and when I say us I mean her forever home

What a great group, they rescued a momma and her 12 puppies!! My friend volunteered to foster them but wouldn't be ready to take them for a week so they stayed with me! All 12 puppies found furever homes and momma did too! They are just fantastic! The picture is one of the pups - Petey!

I had my first experience with Pound Hounds Res-Q several weeks ago when they facilitated my adoption of an 11-year-old Shih Tzu on the euthanization list in New York City. Since time was of the essence (animals are euthanized within eighteen hours of going on the kill list), I completed the application about 10 p.m. and they reviewed it, checked my references and did a credit check, approved me, and called me to let me know I was approved by 10 a.m. the following morning. Then they took care of the adoption and facilitated the transportation of my little guy to my Vermont home. Since that time I have observed them on facebook beating the bushes for suitable fosters so that they can rescue more and more wonderful dogs who have had the misfortune to land in a NYC kill shelter where they inevitably progress to the kill list if they are there more than several days. This is a wonderful organization that is doing real good in the animal world. I highly recommend them to anyone who wants to foster or adopt from NYC's shelters.

I saw a dog on a friends fb page. He was to be killed that day. I fell in love with him before I ever met him. Pound hounds pulled him for me and helped me save his life. I was late paying the adoption fee and was never hounded. Pound hounds are all about the animals. I am forever grateful they saved my baby.

Saw a dog one hour from euthanasia at a local high kill shelter. The dog was rescue only and Pound Hounds agreed to sponsor her if we fostered. We had to go pick her up the next morning. Pound Hounds never laid eyes on her. They then were to come do a home inspection. Never happened. The dog was very dog aggressive (people friendly) and weighed 49 lbs. Quite a risk to walk should she get loose. We worked hard with her. She nipped a few people and tore up the house. We requested financial assistance from Pound Hounds which their site states is available along with any services a foster may need. They refused to help us They continued to state that unless we were adopting the dog the training was a waist of time? We actually found a trainer willing to discount the training. It was impossible for me to keep the dog because of her size and behavior issues but I wanted her to find the right home as she was a loving sweet girl. Upon needing to relocate we again contacted Pound Hounds as we were unsure we would be able to bring the dog. Again they could not help us but tried to make us feel guilty for asking them to take the dog back. (we told them we had never turned a pet into a shelter-true and that we had had dogs and other pets all our lives-true) We spent numerous amounts of money placing her in our kennel on weekends when we had plans-graduations, birthdays- and expected guests or had to be away from the house for long periods of time. The entire time we fostered the dog no contact was made to us by Pound Hounds, we always had to contact them. Found a new place and were able to keep the dog.We contacted Pound Hounds "Great you are going to keep her!!" Suddenly in October we are contacted by Pound Hounds Some one is interested in the dog. Well I say we are keeping her. Oh now we owe THEM $300 and they are threatening to sue us and ruin our credit. They also warn us that the dog has a micro chip in it with their name on it. Good I am opening the door now as we speak and she'll be there tomorrow. Hope you can dig up a foster who enjoys being bit. Also hope you have some insurance!! These people are all about money They had absolutely no interest in this dog until some one wanted to pay them $300 for her. A disgrace They should be shut down!!

We have no idea who this person is. She's not part of our foster base. On a side note, all our fosters pick their OWN dogs they want to foster. We also vet our fosters thoroughly.
