Mission: The Port Huron Museum preserves and illuminates the stories of Michigan and the Great Lakes, through the lives and experiences of local people.
Results: We have been able to update our facilities at the Carnegie Center through Phases 1 & 2 of our Carnegie Reimagined Renovation Project, making the building more of a community gathering space and venue rental while still being primarily an exhibit space. Our Fort Gratiot Light Station has recently seen restoration progress to the Duplex, restoring it back to a 1930s living quarters of the lighthouse keeper. We've also been working on restoring the last remaining building from Fort Gratiot, the oldest wooden structure in St. Clair County, the Fort Gratiot Hospital. This building has a long history and an interesting story ending with the building coming to rest in its current place, next to the Lighthouse park. The hospital project has been ongoing for over 20 years and has been a total grass-roots project by a very dedicated committee. Recently, the exterior is nearly complete and electricity has been run to the building, we can start thinking about how to fix up the interior and make it into a professionally exhibited and curated museum showing the military and medical history of Fort Gratiot.
