Mission: To enrich the skills, prospects and spirit of north minneapolis youth and adults, in partnership with families and communities.
Programs: Education programs: the pyc arts & tech high school, a contract alternative program with minneapolis public schools, provides a diploma-based high school education for over 300 students yearly on the pcyc campus in north minneapolis at oliver and west broadway. In operation since the early 1970s, the school infuses arts and technology into the core curriculum as a strategy to enhance academic performance and teach life-long learning skills. In addition to academic coursework, the school provides wrap-around services in the areas of social work support, an on-site adolescent health clinic, career, college and vocational planning and experiences, service learning, and family outreach. All activities are guided by pcycs strategic goal to increase youth opportunities for school and life success. Key results: approximately 300 youth grades 9 12 enrolled in pyc arts & tech high school in school year 2017-18, and monthly average attendance rates increased 2% over the previous year.
youth development programs:the pcyc youth development program (also called the out of school time program) provides positive youth development, academic achievement and social emotional learning activities for over 200 k-5th grade elementary children annually, in collaboration with the northside achievement zone. Key results: 136 children enrolled in summer friends activities in 2017, with 100% of the children achieving no summer slide in reading for the 10th year in a row. 115 children were enrolled in the out-of-school-time program, and 55% of children testing below grade level in the fall achieved at least half a years growth in reading level, and 90% of parent surveys reported program satisfaction.
cultural arts programspcyc owns and operates the historic capri theater, offering cultural arts presentations and youth arts programming, rental spaces and opportunities, all while serving as a hub for community events. 2017-18 programming included the award-winning legends concert series, capri glee, the saint paul chamber orchestra, the film society of minneapolis st. Paul, the capri big band and others. Youth programming included the capri after school theater program (cast), camp capri, the capri apprentice program, and remix. Phase ii of the capri renaissance project to expand the capri facilities and programming has been launched, and the project is on schedule to break ground in spring 2019.
