Causes: Basketball, Sports
Mission: The primary purpose of orinda magic, inc. Is to foster national amateur competition in basketball for girls ages 10-18. The means of accomplishing this purpose includes, but is not limited to, the operation of a program that provides education, coaching, and an opportunity to compete in events held throughout the united states.
Programs: In 2017, orinda magic fielded 3 teams from march through july, an elite high school team (black), a non-elite high school team (blue), and one team at the 7th/8th grade level. Approximately 35 girls participated. The elite team traveled to "ncaa viewing tournaments" in virginia, chicago, il. ,portland, or, sacramento and orange co. , ca. . The other teams participated primarily in local tournaments, and the blue team also traveled to portland, or. The orinda magic teams won three of the tournaments it participated in, placed third or higher in approximately 5 tournaments it participated in, and otherwise were competitive in all tournaments. Most of the players on the elite team will move on to play basketball at the collegiate level, including two players who will attend a division 1 school. All of the girls in the program are given the opportunity to receive financial assistance to cover the cost of participation and travel. Financial assistance was provided to 75% of the individuals in the program at varying degrees.
