Causes: Centers to Support the Independence of Specific Populations, Human Services
Mission: Provide job training to people with disabilities.
Programs: Dtsc - the oss worked as an advisor to state senators and assembly persons byron sher and gloria molino in the drafting of emergency hazardous waste management bill to provide a safe and economical manner of disposing of electronic waste (e-waste). Our research and findings were incorporated into senate bill 1619. This was a public safety issue, and was of major concern to the oss personnel who were handling these toxic substances as part of their training program. This was not a lobbying effort. The oss taught two service disabled veterans during a six month training period. As a part of our public outreach program, the oss produced over 15 different flyers, attended four earth day outreach programs, and distributed over 15,000 ecology based newspapers. The oss has produced five different publications that were distributed free to non-profit and local government agencies throughout california. All materials were produced by students at the oss facility who were taught journalistic practices as well as safe materials handling procedures. The oss trained four emancipated foster youth, three disabled veterans and 57 homeless residents of the tujunga/sunland neighborhood. The result of our training program findings was the creation of senate bill sb-20 and later sb-50, which created a whole new ecological safety industry in california.
