Mission: Support for the performing arts and curricular freedom in higher education
Programs: Support for the performing arts in higher education: the foundation funds the open jar upspace grant, administered by production workshop (pw), a student group at brown university (a 501(c)(3) public charity). The grant supports the actual production costs of theatrical and other performing arts works taking place in pw's upstairs space performance space. The grant has supported numerous works in its short history.
advocacy for curricular freedom in higher education: the foundation has continued to play a leading role in educating the public about curricular freedom, by (a) maintaining its website as a clearinghouse for information about curricular freedom and open curricula; (b) publishing its new edition of the magaziner-maxwell report (the student-written report that eventually led to the adoption of an open curriculum at brown university), distributed for free online and at cost (or the distributor's minimum price) in print; and (c) distributed materials celebrating curricular freedom. In the future, the foundation will continue these programs and will (a) gather testimonials from individuals who benefited from curricular freedom in higher education, for use in the foundation's advocacy effort; (b) provide information about curricula and curricular freedom to high school students, to assist with the process of making higher education decisions; and (c) work to create a guide to the levels of curricular freedom offered by different colleges and universities.
