Mission: Onereef's mission is to create vibrant reefs and thriving communities by enabling local communities to protect 25% of coral reefs in micronesia, through science, technical tools, and sustainable financing.
Programs: Regional reef protectiononereef supports management programs across two countries in micronesia by providing scientific, financial, and technical expertise that local communities need to protect their coral reefs and livelihoods. Our formal agreements protect more than 350,000 acres of coral reef, and we provide key assistance to communities that represent an additional 250,000 acres of reef. We work closely with national governments, local leadership, and community groups to implement the micronesia challenge, a region-wide initiative to conserve 30% of the marine environment and 20% of terrestrial environment by 2020. We emphasize sustainable public-private financing so that communities can plan for long-term coral management, and leverage palaus $4. 5m annual green fee with global funding opportunities to support community action.
micronesia capacity buildingonereefs scalable model allows us to build local capacity and expertise at our sites in palau and the federated states of micronesia (fsm), and ensure that communities can sustainably manage their reefs into the future. Our high-capacity local staff provide key services like management planning, enforcement trainings and certifications for conservation officers, and building community capacity to implement local and national conservation goals. We have several memorandum of understanding with palaus national marine sanctuary and ministry of justice, and we work at a community and national level to support the micronesia regions ambitious coral conservation legislation.
innovations onereefs community partnership model effectively provides key services and trainings to communities, and a key component of our scalable model is developing innovative ways to reduce costs and increase efficacy of our programs. In 2017, onereef piloted a marine monitor unit in palau to support local enforcement efforts, and is continuing to test and refine on-the-ground solutions that can help communities to better protect their reefs.
