Mission: One to One: Citizen Advocacy, founded in 1987 to serve Beaver County, PA, recognizes that people with disabilities spend much of their lives separated from the larger community. This defacto segregation begins in childhood and intensifies through the adult years. While the amount of public and private money spent on human services continues to grow, the inclusion of people with disabilities in the life of the community does not always keep pace. One to One believes the segregation and devaluation of people with disabilities is best challenged on a person-by-person basis. Citizen Advocacy is one way to maintain the values our community was built on and reshape other values for the better. The acts of speaking out, extending friendship, offering opportunities to participate in real community life and sticking together as neighbors, can make a powerful difference in the lives of all people. Citizen Advocacy offers ordinary people the opportunity to do ordinary things of extraordinary importance.
