Mission: The pacific region oasis is an educational organization that promotes successfull aging for adults age 50 and older through lifelong learning, health programs and volunteer engagement. Our vision is that adults age 50 plus have opportunities to pursue vibrant, healthy, productive and meaningful lives. Pacific region oasis is a supporting organization of the oasis institute, which directs a national network of programs in 42 cities.
Programs: Health - pacific region oasis offers a proactive health promotion strategy to reduce health risks to older adults designed to increase understanding in critical health areas and to address changing health needs. The curriculum consists of nationally developed, evidence-based programs such as active start, chronic disease self-management and free from falls, as well as locally offered exercise and fitness classes, and health education programs in the areas of nutrition, diabetes and alzheimer's education, physical fitness, disease management, sensory changes, mental health, memory and general health promotion.
education - pacific region oasis designs and implements educational programs in the arts, humanities, technology and various other subjects for a broad audience of older adult lifelong learners. Topics range from foreign language, creative writing and poetry to art history and international studies. In 2017, pacific region oasis provided 559 different classes in these areas and had an enrollment of 5,573 representing 1,506 unique participants.
volunteer service - pacific region oasis cooperates with the los angeles unified school district and long beach unified school district to offer the oasis intergenerational tutoring program. This research-based program matches trained volunteer tutors with students in grades kindergarten to 4th grade to build reading skills, improve confidence and positive attitudes toward learning. In 2017, 119 oasis tutors worked with children in 20 area elementary schools. Additionally, there are opportunities for volunteers to teach classes, register participants and assist with special events. In total, 214 volunteers contributed 10,908 volunteer hours to the long beach/lakewood and los angeles communities through pacific region oasis.
technology - pacific region oasis provides a variety of computer courses for its participants using oasis connections, an evidence-based curriculum that includes microsoft word, excel, introduction to the computer, introduction to the internet and 38 additional classes. These courses have been developed through the oasis institute, focusing on assisting older adults to improve their technology skills and remain connected to family, friends and resources and to make it possible to enter or re-enter the workforce. Pacific region oasis also offers classes in social media and smart phone set up and use.
