Mission: The history museum preserves our region's heritage
Programs: Nearly 50,000 individuals visited the museum's exhibits, toured its historic houses, and participated in its school and public programs. Over 20 pieces of historic clothing, including garments worn by the oliver family from the 1890's to the 1920s, all from the history museum collection were on view in the magnificent 38-room oliver mansion in the exhibit clothing copshaholm from january 2 - march 5, 2017. Our amazing cabinet of curiosities: keepers of history for 150 years was on view in the changing gallery february 25-december 31, 2017. Over 320 community residents enjoyed free visits to the history museum in 2017. This includes those who visited on january 16 in commemoration of martin luther king jr. Day, free visits for youth 17 and under were offered on presidents' day on february 20. Special admission rates were also offered on veteran's day and museum day, held in conjunction with smithsonian magazine. All of these special days were held in conjunction with studebaker national museum. The history museum had over 700 membership households at the end of 2017. The public responded positively to a wide variety of public programs offered during the year. Over 3,200 community residents participated in programs that included lectures, museum theatre, living history festivals, and cemetery tours. This is an 8% increase over 2016. Over 5,446 school students participated in museum visits, including visits to the navarre cabin to learn about local pioneers in the 1830s during "cabin days. " this is a 32% increase over 2016. Volunteers served as docents for scheduled and school tours of the oliver mansion. Docents represent over at least half of the museum's volunteer corps of 40. Through programs and special promotions, the history museum partnered with over 31 community organizations, including the studebaker national museum, ruthmere museum, st. Joseph county public library, notre dame center for arts and culture, historic preservation commission of st. Joseph county and south bend, iu south bend, university of notre dame morris performing arts center, south bend civic theatre, wnit public television, south bend parks, st. Joseph county parks, and south bend cubs. The history museum archives department retrieved research information for a total of 518 individuals through onsite visits, emails, and telephone inquiries. Over 4,650 individuals were on site as guests of weddings, corporate events and other facility rentals that were held at the history museum.
