I have been volunteering for this organization for some time now. See, at first, it was thought that since we are official registered non-profit 501(c)3 and all, that we would be privy to government funds and grants and such and receive these funds relatively timely manner. But just because we are privy to them, does not mean we would get them nor that we should accept them! Now, you may be asking yourself right now, “why in the hell would we not accept a whole bunch of money being offered to us-regardless of whether its from the government or a politician’s earmark?!?!?!?! Money is Money-right?!?!?!” WRONG! Money is NOT just money, especially in the US and even MORE especially when it comes from a US politician! Those monies almost ALWAYS come with some sort of “special consideration” attached. If you want a perfect example of this, take a look at what recently happened to the Smithsonian Museum when they exhibited an art piece of Jesus with ants all over him. Because this piece of art wasn’t to the liking of a certain politician, the congressman threatened the Smithsonian with pulling some of its funding and alas, the art piece was off the Smithsonian’s walls in a jiffy! Do you mean to tell me you can’t imagine “them” pulling that same bs with us? It would probably happen on almost a weekly basis! I can see it now, some dork politician talkin’ bout “Oh, we dont agree with the fact that you have a tribute exhibition to Tupac Shakur because he was a gangster and a criminal and an extremist….take it down or we’re pulling your funding!” Is that really the kind of museum we want for Hip-Hop? Hells to da naw! And this is why I love and respect this organization so much, despite the many struggles and long financial strife, they have a set standard of businiess and commitment to an ideal that they stick with no matter what-aka THEY WILL NEVER SELL-OUT! I made a commitment when I joined this project all the way back That should count for a lot more than it does these days.
