Mission: To enhance the opportunities for economic and personal independence of people who are blind, primarily through creating, sustaining and improving employment.
Programs: Abilityone program accomplishments: 5,876 people who are blind were employed at nib and its associated nonprofit agencies during fiscal 2017. 606 people who are blind were promoted or obtained competitive positions within nib associated nonprofit agencies or their communities as a result of training and rehabilitation services. Nib and its associated agencies generated 301 new job opportunities for people who are blind in fiscal 2017 through product manufacturing and service delivery. Nib delivers professional training to people who are blind to help them advance their careers; one program, effective supervision, provided training to 17 people who are blind in fiscal 2017, providing skills to take on increased responsibility.
new york state preferred source program accomplishments:the new york state preferred source program for new yorkers who are blind (nyspsp) is a state-mandated initiative to create and sustain employment opportunities for new yorkers who are legally blind at 10 affiliated nonprofit agencies. State and local agencies are required to purchase certain products and services produced by the new york nonprofits, employing more than 450 people who are blind or visually impaired.
