Causes: Boys Clubs, Children & Youth
Mission: My brother's keeper alliance (mbk alliance) is an independent, nonpartisan 501(c)(3) that works to elevate the voices of boys and young men of color and unite cross-sector leaders and youth to improve life outcomes and impact lasting social change.
Programs: Catalyst / challenge communities program teamat a local level mbk alliance prioritized work in several mbk communities. In april 2017, mbk alliance hosted its inaugural youth summit in albuquerque in collaboration with mbk albuquerque and the gathering of nations powwow, where nearly 100 native young men between the ages of 16-25 had the opportunity to engage in youth-led discussions that focused on key issues surrounding the creation of safe and supportive native communities. Later in may, in partnership with mbk boston we hosted a solution session in boston which convened youth, municipal and community leaders to discuss the progress, opportunities and challenges the city experiences in advancing opportunity for bymoc. In june, mbk alliance hosted its third opportunity summit in memphis in collaboration with thecity of memphis, memphis office of youth services,thegreater memphis chamber,workforce investment network,and several other memphis based organizations where more than 80 companies and community based organizations helped to create pathways to success for memphis boys and young men of color (bymoc). More than 1,000 memphis youth, between the ages of 16 and 29 attended the summit, nearly 500 were offered jobs on the spot or a chance for a second interview in the coming weeks. This year, mbk alliance and the new york public library launched a mentorship initiative which supports the academic, career and social development of nyc bymoc who have been disproportionately affected by poverty and social immobility. The mentorship program pairs business leaders with teens to enhance the skills that lead to academic achievement, college and career.
accelerator communities program teamat a national level mbk alliance prioritized partnership convening's, collaboration, investing in data and technology infrastructure and campaigns to support boys and young men of color. In july, mbk alliance hosted a three-day regional summit, convening 19 cities, counties and tribal nations that accepted president obama's my brother's keeper community challenge in the western region of the united states. Attendees also included youth, mayors and community leaders, who celebrated progress and shared best practices to expand opportunity for boys and young men of color (bymoc). Throughout the year, in partnership with national partners such as bloomberg associates, isl, bytecubed and policy link, and local partners in oakland, ca, mbk alliance began to build a national data platform called the equity intelligence platform (eip). The eip is designed to improve communities' data competency around racial equity indicators, among other national supports that will further strengthen the mbk national network. The data platform will provide cities, community based organizations, and provider agencies with the ability to measure and track progress in improving outcomes for bymoc. The eip is expected to launch and pilot in oakland, ca in q1 2018. Last, in collaboration with national partners, mbk alliance developed an awareness and call-to-action campaign to amplify positive, realistic conversation around bymoc.
