Mission: To enable individuals and groups in new mexico, colorado, and texas, who are involved in growing wool and creating wool products to develop programs to meet their technilogical, production, maketing, finance, business, and other related needs.
Programs: The taos wool festival is an annual event produced by the mountain and valley wool association, which takes place the first weekend in october. The event takes place in kit carson park on with approximately 60 fiber vebdor and approximately 5 food vendor booths. Workshops are held during the 2 to 3 days prior to the wool festival weekend, in locations in the town of taos. Wool festival events include sheep shearing demonstrations, a fiber animal exhibit, fiber art demonstrations, hands-on projects for children, live music, competitions (described in more detail below) and a silent auction. Competitions include the wool/fleece competition and show, the yarn competition and show and the garment and home accessories contest. Wool growers, hand spinners and fiber artisans are invited to submit their products and work for judging and exhibit. There are typycally over 100 participants in these competitions each year. Workshops feature regional and nationally known fiber artists and instructors. Participants and instructors for these workshops come from across the us. Many of the workshops take place over multiple days. There are typically 100 to 150 workshop attendees each year. The taos wool festival has an annual attendance of approximately 4000-5000.
