Mission: Motivating, inspiring, supporting and serving sexually exploited youth, inc. (misssey, inc. ) advocates and facilitates the empowerment and inner transformation of sexually exploited youth by holistically addressing their specific needs. The organization collaborates to bring about systemic and community change to prevent the sexual exploitation of children and youth through raising awareness, education and policy development. The organization is a not-for-profit corporation that operates in oakland, california. The organization was formed and commenced its operations in may 2009.
Programs: Misssey facilitates the inner transformation of commercially sexually exploited youth by holistically addressing their specific needs with a spectrum of customized direct services. We serve approximately 120 young people per month. Intensive case management - provides each young person with needs assessment; support to engage in therapeutic services, education, employment, enrichment, and positive recreational activities; and assistance in meeting basic needs. The case manager works closely with each young person's family and/or service provider to ensure the young person is in a safe and supportive residential setting. Drop-in center - the drop-in center is open monday - friday from 1:00pm - 6:00pm during critical after school hours. Services are provided on a drop-in basis to female-identified and - assigned youth ages 14-24. The drop-in center encourages critical reflection, life skills development, self-sufficiency training, enrichment and recreational activities, and connections to resources through workshops, group sessions, and field trips. A healthy meal, snacks, and access to clean clothes and toiletries are provided each day.
prevention missseys prevention and outreach manager facilitates interactive workshops with at-risk girls in oakland schools to ensure youth have the knowledge to protect themselves, using an innovative csec prevention curriculum pioneered by misssey co-founder nola brantley and others. Missseys youth engagement specialists additionally provide preventative information sessions to at-risk youth on-site at the alameda county assessment center.
mentorship - through our mentorship program, misssey connects youth with caring, aspirational adults in the community to foster meaningful connections that can last a lifetime. These mentors model healthy relationships and behaviors to youth, in addition to providing emotional support and guidance. Volunteer mentors are selected, screened, and trained by misssey staff and provided with ongoing support. Training - the misssey training institute offers introductory, intermediate, and advanced anti- trafficking curriculum for service providers, community-based organizations, government agencies, and schools. Since our inception, misssey has trained over 17,000 service providers and professionals in how to recognize and effectively serve victims and survivors of commercial sexual exploitation.
