Programs: Junior friends of the library - this program provided cultural activities and trips for underprivileged children in the community and encouraged them to use the library.
summer reading program & back to school enrichment. The summer reading program, held in june, provided intense reading instruction for at risk students. Of the twenty students who enrolled in stevenson and bridgeport, all wer low income students. The lead teacher for each site was a certified teacher of the jackson county schools, who used the ari methods for instruction. The lead teacher was assisted by education students from athens state university and volunteers. Students who attended the program daily were given an incentive card from k mart. As a part of the summer reading program, the mslc provided support to the stevenson public library in the form of book purchases. Over 200 students will be served as a result of this service.
back to school enrichment - the back to school enrichment program, held in august, provided reading instruction through leveled readers, big books, and reading games that focused on long and short vowels. Hands-on math activities covered measurement, telling time, and counting money. Art activities snacks, and outdoor activities were planned to incorporate the vowel for the day. Of the twenty students enrolled for the program, thirteen were low income and attended at no cost to the family. All students who attended received a packet of school supplies for the coming year.
