Mission: Houston northwest community center, inc. (hnwcc) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that is dedicated to making a difference in our community one life at a time, with the realization that with the combined energy of many thousands can be reached. Our community-based organization strives to include and service people from all walks of life and all levels of education. We will accomplish our mission by providing quality educational, helath and recreational programs to change the future of our community.
Programs: Food pantry - for those with emergency needsthe houston northwest community center, inc. (hnwcc) community food pantry provides emergency food assistance for area residents. The pantry served 1,539 families in 2014 by providing 47,081 pounds of food. In addition to monetary support, the pantry received donations of 1,216 volunteer hours and 13,324 pounds of food. Community organizations which support the pantry include bear creek united methodist church, copperhead boy scout district, boy scout troop/pack 827, peace community church, cy-hope, copperfield ymca, life path church, addicks united methodist church, united methodist women, girl scout troop 16095, keller williams realty, covenant lutheran church, st. Aiden's episcopal church, deerfield village bazaar, and the lakes on eldridge women's group.
real cool summer sports campthe houston northwest community center, inc. (hnwcc) real cool summer sports camp is a 4-week fun sports program offered three days a week at discounted rates for youngsters who have completed second through sixth grades. Sports feature basketball and volleyball for boys and girls. Conducted tuesday through thursday from 9:00a. M. To 2:00p. M. , the camp provides a snack.
english as a second language (esl) and general education development (ged) instructionesl/ged programs are taught by the harris county department of education. Houston northwest community center, inc. (hnwcc) has historically sponsored these classes on the campus of bear creek united methodist church. During the 2013-2014 school year, 228 esl and 135 ged students were enrolled. There were 12 ged graduates in 2013-2014. To date in the 2014-2015 school year, 215 ged students attend classes. Ged classes are currently offered four days a week.
revision - to mentor incarcerated youth and offer hope for their future. In conjunction with revision houston and several area churches, houston northwest community center, inc. (hnwcc) trains adult role models to mentor youth each week while youth are in harris county juvenile facilities. After the youth is released, the mentoring relationship continues. Using this model, recidivism rates among teens are drastically reduced, increasing the probability that the teen will have a different future and avoid arrest as an adult. Twenty-five adults from our area have begun the training process and seven are actively mentoring. Weekly post-release gatherings are hosted by hnwcc on the campus of bear creek united methodist church. Revision's partners include st. Luke's united methodist church, st. Martin's episcopal church, and the harris county sheriff's department.
books to kidshouston northwest community center, inc. (hnwcc) provides free books to children in its community who are educationally at risk. The program, known as books to kids, reflects a simple and important goal: to provide kids in need with books they can call their own. Hnwcc has collected over 5,000 new and gently-used books that are appropriate for youngsters ages 2 to 10 years. Donation events are organized for each month and information on those times and locations can be found on the hnwcc website.
