Memorial Health System was established to acquire, own, and support various healthcare providers and institutions and to support charitable and educational programs and activities relating thereto. The Health System provides a broad range of services and activities to support its charitable mission to help maintain, restore and improve the health of the people and communities it serves. These services include: Participation in the Medicare and Medicaid programs at a loss (net reimbursement less cost of care) of approximately $33,076,000 and $37,568,000 in 2008 and 2007, respectively for Memorial Medical Center. Another major component of the Health System's service to the community is its commitment to provide necessary medical services to everyone, without regard to their ability to pay for those services. The Health System has a written charity care policy and maintains records to identify and monitor the level of charity care it provides. The cost of uncompensated care attributable to the charity care provided by Memorial Medical Center was $12,772,000 and $10,587,000 during the years ended September 30, 2008 and 2007, respectively.
In addition to the above, System-affiliated organizations provide numerous other services to meet the needs of the community. Services provided include operation of typically unprofitable programs that would not be provided by a for-profit institution (examples include long-term rehabilitation services, psych and a burn unit). Below are additional community benefit programs.
