Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Children & Youth, Environment, Environmental Education, Youth Development, Youth Development Programs

Mission: Meet The Wilderness was founded in 1974 to bring inner city kids from Chicago to achieve personal growth and life manegement skills through the challenges of a true camping, backpacking, hiking, climbing expedition in the Colorado wilderness. Since then our reach has expanded to include Eagle County, CO; Denver; Milwaukee; and other cities in the US. We collaborate with youth, groups and individuals. The goal is to ensure that the character building which occurs in the wilderness continues when the child returns to their home location. We have been recognized for excellence nationally (nominated for the WT Grant Foundation Youth Prize) and within Colorado (El Pomar Foundation Awards of Excellence).

Hello, I was there with my former employer and our youth during The Gulf War.
We stayed in Minturn Colorado and travelled from there to the trails.
Jim and his team provided excellent training for us.
It was the most challenging and spirited adventure I was involved in with our youth.
Hiking, cooking meals, campfires, and sleeping in the outdoors in the beauty of mother nature: are memories as vivid as yesterday.
I'd recommend this program to families as well.
You might experience altitude sickness. In my experience, the beauty of the trails outweighs the altitude sickness.
The guides are expert in first aid and have emergency services in place.
Again, I'd recommend families go on this trip as well.
