Mission: Our friends say: MBIRA helps to erase stereotypes by presenting ancient African music that is melodic and complex, and does not include drums; and models social responsibility by supporting traditional musicians with recordings and instrument sales. MBIRA Mission Statement: MBIRA supports the ancient musical traditions of Zimbabwe through education, performances, and recordings in the United States and worldwide. It maintains the largest archive of Shona music in the world and provides essential support to traditional musicians and instrument makers in Zimbabwe.
Results: Over $1 million to Zimbabwean musicians and instrument makers so far! Thousands around the world playing traditional Shona mbira music of Zimbabwe after learning from us and our educational materials. Mbira music is used to bring peace and healing, and connect the living with the ancestors to bring harmony. Traditional musicians in Zimbabwe applaud these efforts.
Programs: MBIRA offers Zimbabwean music workshops for all ages, concerts, and an archive of rare Zimbabwean music field recordings, available to universities and the public at www.mbira.org.
