mattoon community food center was founded in 1986 to provide food to those in need. With the help of 50 volunteers, the center served 1,753 people that first year. In 2016, the center served more than 22,000 people with the help of more than 200 volunteers who worked more than 8,250 hours to distribute more than 550,000 pounds of food and personal items that were purchased or donated to the center in 2016.
