Programs: Hunger services strive to help residents of newport county move from hunger to health via urgent food services, nutritional counseling and education. In 2017, 2919 individuals were served through our various hunger relief programs. Our breakfast program, the only daily meal site in newport county, served 8,729 meals to 237 individuals in 2017. 73% of clients were male, 68% were homeless, and 82% earned less than $9,999 per year. Feed a friend food pantry provided emergency food assistance to 2,779 clients in need; 682 individuals were new to the pantry in 2017. The client-choice pantry is open 3 days each week, including one evening to accomodate working families. Clients receive healthy, seasonal produce through partnerships with local farms and community gardens, and the ri community food bank. 100% of pantry clients are low-income. All clients have access to a registered dietitian for nutrition education and one on one nutrition counseling free of charge. In 2017, the feed a friend food pantry provided 226,569 meals. 251,139 pounds of food were distributed, which included 41,426 lbs. Of fresh produce. 959 individuals in 333 families received thanksgiving baskets and 1,367 individuals in 435 families received christmas food baskets. 62 emergency food boxes were distributed when the pantry was closed. Mlkcc provides a community meal for anyone in need four times a year. Food 2 friends delivered fresh produce, groceries, household, personal care items, and frozen food to homebound clients across newport county. 763 deliveries were made to 111 individuals. 51% were over 65, 73% were ill or disabled, 57% lived in newport, 9% lived in middletown, 16% lived in tiverton, and 18% lived in portsmouth. 21 individuals were new to the food 2 friends program in 2015.
childcare/educational services - preschool, after school, and summer camp programs are delivered in a literacy and science-based environment. Our programs provide low income working parents with a safe and nurturing place to care for their children during the workday. Our education programs support the academic success of the children. These include monthly senior lunch & learn, livfit nutrition and fitness classes, and family dinners.
