Causes: Health, Nursing Facilities, Seniors
Mission: Martha and mary health services provides quality, compassionate care for adults and seniors regardless of faith, ethnicity or economic status. We do this in a christian manner by offering those we serve intergenerational experiences, a caring place for rehabilitation, and an opportunity to live with dignity, honor and individuality.
Programs: Martha & mary health services (mmhs) and its affiliated organizations have served seniors and others in need in the west sound region since 1954. Mmhs is not only one of the largest skilled nursing providers in washington, we consistently rank among the top three to four providers when it comes to access. In 2014, 570 individuals (507 admissions) were served, with an average age of 81 years and average overall length of stay of 43 days (includes both short-stay and long term care programs). While 68% of the days of care provided were medicaid, only 55% of our resident care revenue is paid by the medicaid program. More than $2. 1m in underfunded care was provided in 2014. Mmhs is comprised of three resident care areas: bay/courtyard, marina and garden. Although programming and services overlap in all three areas, each has its signature programs specific to the needs of residents served in those areas. Bay/courtyard serves individuals with both memory and behavioral health care needs. In 2014, with some kitsap county sales and use tax seed money, mmhs started work to make both physical and program updates to develop a behavioral health program, specifically serving individuals getting stuck in hospital emergency departments, inpatient beds and geropysych beds- a problem that spans our state and nation. The acuity related to individuals with behavioral health needs is not, in large part, recognized in our current medicaid reimbursement structure, so we are looking for alternative ways to help subsidize this challenging but important work. In 2014, two clinical managers were certified to teach special de-escalation techniques and interventions to mmhs staff. Almost 100 employees were trained on the (mandt) program along with individuals from 7 community agencies. Criteria was developed in conjunction with harrison medical center staff and a plan for evidence-based physical improvements to the unit was made to stand up this program. In the fall/winter of 2014, we admitted 5 patients meeting the definition of behavioral health. To help serve this special population, we lean on partners like kitsap mental health services and continue to work very closely with the local alzheimer's association chapter to provide on-going support to both mmhs and community families caring for individuals with alzheimer's disease and related conditions. The marina care area serves primarily long term care residents with chronic conditions requiring 24-hour care and support. For many of these residents, our robust quality of life program is an important factor to their overall wellness and satisfaction. Pet, music, horticulture and art therapies are among the activities offered to this resident group. Intergenerational programming is offered daily in conjunction with our childcare and early learning programs. The garden care area specializes in short-stay rehabilitation. We offer 24-hour rn coverage, 7 day-a-week physical and occupational therapies and 6 day-a-week speech language therapy. In 2014, the average rehabilitation stay was approximately 17 days, more than one week less than state and national averages and our 30-day hospital readmission rate ranked #1 in kitsap co and well below state and national averages. We served and returned home a record number of sub-acute patients in 2014- an increase of almost 9% compared to 2013. Mmhs continues to demonstrate quality outcomes and high patient/family satisfaction while serving a very diverse portfolio of individuals and needs.
