Causes: Arts & Culture, History Museums
Mission: The Mandarin Museum & Historical Society's mission is to provide a venue to foster greater understanding, appreciation, enjoyment, and stewardship of the natural and cultural heritage of the lower St. Johns River basin through time. To achieve this goal, the Mandarin Museum & Historical Society will research topics, collect, preserve, interpret and exhibit documents, objects, and oral histories that relate to the history of Mandarin within the context of regional, Florida, and national history. As a private, not-for-profit, education and research institution, operated for the benefit of the community, the Mandarin Museum & Historical Society will disseminate this information to adults and children through tours, educational programs, special events, publications, and the museum archives.
Programs: Quarterly programs: 4 times a year, mmhs presents a guest speaker & program related to the area's history. Special events: the winter celebration is held annually; the "miss aggie" day is held annually to celebrate women's history month. Collaborative events: mmhs works with organizers of special events including mandarin community club, and mandarin arts festival.
school programs: each year elementary school children take part in field trips to the mandarin store, post office, and walter jones historical park. Museum facility: operated in partnership with city of jacksonville. Exhibits include historic timeline, maple leaf shipwreck, harriett b. Stowe and importance of african american history in the area.
group tours: mmhs facilities are open for informal tours. Museum docents lead group tours by appointment. Speakers bureau: mmhs board members are called on regulary to speak to diverse community organizations about mandarin history.
