Causes: Food, Food Programs
Mission: To alleviate food insecurity, malnutrition and food waste in the community. Recover perishable food and produce and deliver to agencies with feeding programs for those in need.
Programs: Since 1995, magic city harvest has been recovering food to alleviate food insecurity and food waste in jefferson, shelby, and talladega counties. Since then, over 15,000,000 pounds of food have been picked up and redistributed. In 2016, magic city harvest redistributed approximately 788,155 pounds of recovered food. It is difficult to define the number of people served during the year. Some of the agencies and shelters that magic city harvest delivers to feed 20-40 people per day while others feed 120-150 per day depending on the time of year and weather conditions. Although the focus is primarily on recovery of donated perishable food, magic city harvest is committed and involved in multiple collaboritive initiatives which are addressing the challenges and barriers to area residents accessing sufficient, nutritious food.
