Mission: Over the years, the need for child abuse prevention education programs became increasingly apparent as not only more accounts of abuse emerged but an increasing number of jewish communities in the united states and around the world inquired about and requested the culturally appropriate and sensitive safety kid programs for their communities. Magen yeladim: child safety institutes's mission is to meet the need for culturally sensitive child abuse prevention materials and education in the orthodox jewish communities throughout the united states. The organization seeks to educate parents, caregivers, and children through groundbreaking and innovative programming in schools, camps and community workshops. Magen yeladim child safety institute fulfills its mission through a variety of services that include:1) education and prevention programs2) child safety awareness training3) seminars for students, parents and school personnel4) liaison with/consultation for institutions, agencies and jewis
Programs: The safety kid is a comprehensive child abuse prevention program for school staff, parents and children and is designed specifically for the orthodox jewish community. The program was developed by debbie fox, lcsw, and is guided by the national center for missing and exploited children, the halachic advisory board, and mothers advocating prevention (map). The magen yeladim international safety kid program is designed in a culturally-sensitive way to meet the needs of the orthodox jewish community. All teaching materials have been created under the guidance of the los angeles-based halachic advisory board. Language and visual representations have been carefully chosen to meet high standards of modesty and appropriateness. The safety kid program relies on children being able to personally identify with the teaching materials. While the message is consistent throughout, boys and girls have their own respective teaching cards, and we also designed our material in two different versions:
project safecamp is an original, highly professional counselor training program designed to educate and empower young adults as they face the increasingly difficult situations present in many jewish summer camps today. The program educates camp directors across the country in equipping their counselors to handle the sensitive matters associated with many of the children who attend camps today. The all-inclusive instruction is available to every camp and counselor alike, and for camps to ultimately require every staff member to participate in the project safecamp training and certificate program. This unique program includes a comprehensive safety curriculum that can be easily accessed online or in a variety of other convenient venues.
project community shield (pcs) is a bold new initiative designed to be a resource, support and referral service for the los angeles jewish community. Project community shield is an ongoing community protection system that will keep children safe by bringing together multiple community and technological elements. The organization is working with community partners and donors to develop a variety of key elements to the program. 1) comprehensive resource database incorporating individual professionals and agencies with an expertise in areas relating to child abuse for both victims and offenders. 2) abuse resource and referral line providing support for families of victims and offenders schools, individual communities, camps; administrators, teachers, rabbis and counselors. 3) rabbinic advisory board consisting of a group of leading local rabbis with an expertise in child abuse and working collaboratively in an advocacy role with local authorities. 4) community consultation and liaison providing relationship-building with and cultural-sensitivity training for law enforcement, child protective services, the district attorneys office and community rabbis. 5) intervention with police, prosecution and the courts offering guidance in dealing with local authorities and minimizing the trauma for victims and their families. 6) web-based information on child abuse monitoring trends and repeat allegations of abuse for community families, professionals and agencies alike.
