Mission: The lycee francais of new york's mission is to engage each student in the pursuit of academic and personal excellence in a bilingual and international environment. Our students' education is anchored in a distinct method of bilingual french and american learning to foster both academic achievement and personal development. Our community of students, educators, parents and alumni are guided by common principles that emphasize the importance of inquisitiveness, respect, integrity and empathy. Our students are inspired to learn, think independently and embrace diverse perspectives and cultures. Our values celebrate the service to others.
Programs: The lycee's curriculum prepares students for the french baccalaureate and for entry into leading universities and colleges in the u. S. , canada, france, and other european countries. At the prekindergarten level, half of all instruction is in english and the other half is in french; each class has two teachers, one for each language. By first grade, classes are taught primarily in french, but there is also a strong english-language curriculum. The lycee's emphasis on language is not limited to just french and english. From the 3rd grade, all students study mandarin. From the sixth grade, students can chose to either continue mandarin or to study italian, spanish, or german. At grade 10, students have a choice of an extra language: latin or greek. Students qualify for high school diplomas upon the successful completion of grade 11. In their final years, all students take examinations for the french classic baccalaureate, the french baccalaureate in the international option (oib), or the french-american baccalaureate, a diploma recently created in collaboration with the college board, which combines advance placement exams ("aps") and french tests. In addition to academics, a variety of team and individual sports are offered at lfny including basketball, cross country, dance, golf, gymnastics, judo, rugby, soccer, softball, tennis and track and field and lfny competes in interscholastic athletics for most of these sports. The lives of students at lfny are enriched by many other extracurricular activities, including art, computer clubs, drama, music, photography and yearbook. The richness of the new york metropolitan area's resources enhances lfny's opportunity for special events, including museum visits, concerts, dances, a shakespeare competition, student weekend-exchange programs, and community service. Lfny has several choruses, which have numerous scheduled performances throughout the year. The 350-seat auditorium has enabled lfny to offer a rich cultural program related to french and francophone culture. Thanks to a diverse repertoire of public lectures, films, concerts and plays, the center plays a vital role in underscoring the importance of french contributions to the international cultural tapestry. The cultural center aims to enrich the curriculum of the students and provide them and the lycee community with the opportunity to meet with professionals who are leaders in their field. Lfny offers a full summer program, with both full and half day schedules, encompassing a range of activities, including academics, athletics, music and art. This program is available to students who do not attend lfny during the academic year. Lfny shares its gym facilities with eleanor roosevelt high school for their winter basketball practices.
auxiliary activities includes bookstore, afterschool activities, sports and summer camp.
