Programs: Zootampa at lowry park features 63 acres of lush, natural habitats comprising florida, asia, primates, wallaroo, and africa. As a nonprofit cultural organization committed to conservation, zootampa focuses on animals from florida, such as manatees and florida panthers, and animals from florida-like climates, such as elephants and orangutans. The zoo houses 1,300 animals in naturalistic outdoor habitats year-round. Zootampa helps to ensure the sustainability of a healthy, genetically diverse, and demographically varied population of numerous species. The zoo has contributed to the propagation of species, in conjunction with aza species survival plans, to help save numerous species from extinction. Up-close experiences with living animals at the zoo teach the value of the living world firsthand. In fiscal year 2017 the following occurred in relation to the zoo's educational programs:- group sales reached 69,588 people. - outreach reached 25,419 people. - nite sites reached 1,492 people. - birthday parties reached 3,254 people. - summer camps reached 974 people. - 722 families took advantage of the year-round early childhood education programs. In fiscal year 2017 the following occurred in relation to the zoo's animal programs:- manatees continued to be rehabilitated at the david a. Straz jr. Manatee hospital (21 rehabilitated), 14 were released back into the wild. - notable births: greater kudu (3), hartman's zebra, nyala (2), schimdt's monkey- notable acquisitions: african penguin (2), blue duiker (2), chimpanzee, false gavial, hartman's zebra, nile lechwe, pygmy hippo, red wolf, siamangadditionally, in fiscal year 2017 the following occurred in relation to the zoo's volunteer programs:- 1,084 volunteers contributed to the zoo's two main mission programs: animal conservation and education.
