Causes: Arts & Culture, Historical Organizations
Mission: Promote, facilitate, and enable the preservation, discovery, academic study, appreciation, and stewardship of public and privately-owned cultural resources, historic structures, and archaeological sites in the mid-atlantic.
Programs: Pig point ceremonial complex: this multi year investigation and study of a highly significant prehistoric archaeological site was completed in fy17. With state grant funding, ltp supported an intensive investigation and study which resulted in a 300 page final report compiled by scholars, interns and students. We estimate 350 students, volunteers, citizens scientists and visitors have engaged with the pig point site through hands on programs, or through lectures presented by the ltp consultants.
hurricane sandy disaster relief: this multi year project was completed in fy17. With state grant funding, and national park service support, the project has allowed scholars and students to conduct and report upon salvage excavations at 5 nationally significant sites. The project has contributed to the national conversations about how to address and respond to climate change and resultant sea level rise. The project findings were presented at a national conference titled "history above water" and the results of the research and study shared with a larger scientific community.
river farm field session in archaeology: with support from the archaeological society of maryland, the ltp hosted a field session in archaeology in the summer of 2016. The project included intensive data processing and analysis after the field investigations were completed. Dozens of students have particiapted in the labwork and analaysis that followed the field investiations
other primary activities include ~ assisting the local gibsn isalnd hisotrical society with hisotric and archaeolgical research realted to the earliest european inhabitant of the island, ~ development and presenttion of four hands on archaeolgy workshops (with attendance of about 500 people), staffing an informational booth at the local county fair, where we shared local hisotry, and sought new volunteers to particpatei nthe programs we offer, ~ ongoinf thursday night labs, where we offer a short presentaiotn from area hisotrians and archaeolgists open to the public for free, ~ the sdevelopment and instalaltion of two public exhibits on archaeolgical resources across anne arundel county, which wil be accomapnied by brief program p-resentions on local hisotry. . Less than 400 dollars has been spent on administration costs, all other expentitures directly support the projects and programs discussed here.
