Mission: Local food hub is a nonprofit organization that partners with virginia farmers to increase community access to local food.
Programs: Distribution - local food hub provides the services and infrastructure necessary for the distribution of fresh, high-quality local food. Using a 3200 square foot refrigerated warehouse and 3 refrigerated vehicles, it is able to partner with over 60 local farms to offer fresh fruits and vegetables, frozen meats and poultry, eggs, grains, and more to restaurants, retailers, hospitals, schools, food banks, health clinics, and partner distributors. It is committed to paying farmers a fair price for their food and reinstating small farms as the food source for the community.
community partnerships - local food hub partners with area organizations to ensure that the choice of local food is available to all segments of the community. Through its partnership with three area clinics, local food hub supplies free produce "prescriptions" to patients who are at risk for certain diet-related illnesses. Through eight regional school districts, and private schools and universities, local food hub works to get local food to students. Through local businesses, local food hub delivers fresh produce to employees. Local food hub is putting fresh, nutritious food in the hands of those who need it most, and educating the next generation about the value of local food.
grower services - local food hub's grower services program helps small farms successfully navigate the wholesale marketplace and make their operations more financially viable. It provides no-cost training, technical assistance, cost-sharing opportunities, and networking to these farms, and is also a regional leader in food safety training. It has assisted 15 of its partner farms in achieving good agricultural practices (gap) certification, a government- and industry-recognized standard in food safety that is among the highest regarded credentials available.
