Mission: LO*OP Center was founded in 1975 to learn how to help people meet the opportunities and challenges posed by cultural diversity and technological change. Working through demonstrations projects, research and opinion papers, conference sessions and seminar presentations, LO*OP brings original and collaborative ways of communicating and learning to receptive audiences around the world. To date, LO*OP has focused on the application of computing to learning and teaching, use of culture-general knowledge to facilitate domestic and international accord and uses of systems thinking in everyday life.
Programs: LO*OP currently operates a research program in Open Educational Systems (OES) and The History of Computing in Learning and Education Project(HCLE). Both projects are "social web" oriented, available to participants worldwide and run by volunteers (1 for OES, about 25 for HCLE). Immediate target beneficiaries of the work include schools, teachers, educational policy makers, and curriculum developers. Ultimate beneficiaries are the school-based, workplace and independent learners who are enabled to learn the content of their choice, more efficiently under more favorable social conditions at lower cost.
