Mission: The literary society of the desert is a non-profit organization promoting literacy and the love of reading through presentations by (and discussions with) leading authors, as well as promoting literacy, writing skills, and the love of reading in the community.
Programs: 5 monthly luncheons take place during the desert season where authors meet with members and guests to discuss their books. Support of public libraries in the coachella valley - 1,000 grants are given to each of the 12 libraries for a total of 12,000. A set of author's books is given to each library - value 1,200 12 librarians attend the grant luncheon - 990 to encourage the love of reading in young people, 9 students and 1 faculty member from 10 local schools are invited to meet privately with the featured author for an hour prior to attending the luncheon at which the author addresses the membership. The author's book is given to each student and faculty member at least one month before the event to allow time to prepare for their private meeting. 90 students and 10 faculty members - 7,500
