Mission: It is the mission of leach botanical garden to maintain and enhance living collections of plants for the purpose of education, research and conservation and to preserve the legacy of the gardens founders, john and lilla leach.
Programs: Botany horticulture-- we transformed the ericaceous and center circle plant beds. We began tree removals under the programmatic permit issued by urban forestry. With portland parks we collaborated and contributed to the plans for horticultural elements in the upper garden. Our summer lecture series focused on botanical/horticultural topics. Garden staff recruited new volunteer teams to do replanting of existing botanical collection areas. A second horticultural intern was selected to work in the garden during the summmer. Partnerships continued with staff from osu, hoyt arboretum and wisdom of the elders. We extended our hours in late summer to allow more pople to visit.
education - continuing work on the design has refined indoor and outdoor spaces where educational programs can take place-phase one will include a covered terrace and arbor and the gathering green will provide tent space. Interpretive signage will educate visitors about the botanical experiences presented and the inclusion of a wide variety of botanical collection beds and settings which make that educational element robust. Summer day camps continue -- not only those run by the garden but classes and activites by partner education groups. The alice ott middle schools sun program continues to engage nearly 20 youngsters in a yearlong learning program at our childrens garden. Other classes from drawing to plant propagation were presented. Education audiences were flat compared to the previous year--in part because our capacity is limited.
