Mission: The landmark society of western new york, inc. Protects the unique architectural heritage of our region and promotes preservation and planning practices that foster healthy, livable, and sustainable communities.
Programs: Education - the society provides educational materials to the public in the areas of older house preservation, community building, and appropriate stewardship of the built environment. It accomplished this through programming of classes, lectures, and tours. All three of the above described program components benefit from the maintenance of a house museum and a historic garden and historic park, all three of which are opened to the public at various times during the year. General attendance for society education events for 2014-2015 was 10,910. Four volumes of its general publication, landmarks, were issued with 13,500 copies distributed. The general membership of the society is 1,954. The program is also supported by contributions.
advocacy - advisory services to municipalities, resource materials to other preservation organizations, and the stewardship of historic properties advances our advocacy work. Closely tied to its mission of architectural and cultural preservation is the dual responsibility of translating education and advocacy materials to the appropriate audience. Building a base of support for a specific project is a direct result of advocacy. Long term involvement in the historic and economic impact of preservation is the result of education. The program is also supported by contributions.
preservation - the society's preservation work encompasses assistance with the preparation of historic designation applications, the production of impact studies, historic preservation review and assessment resources, consultation services, and other communication and resource preparation to aid preservationists, property owners, developers, and government entities in their interactions with preservation issues, districts, projects, and properties. The direct service area of the landmark society includes the nine adjacent counties to monroe county, new york; orleans, genesee, wyoming, livingston, ontario, yates, seneca, and wayne. The audiences for the preservation services and advocacy activities are a combined 1,218,627. The program is also supported by contributions.
