We’ve fostered and adopted many kittens and cats with various rescue groups in the area over the years and my small business often makes multiple small donations throughout the year to many rescue groups. Unfortunately Kitten Central has been a massive disappointment recently and we will no longer be donating to them or working with them ever again.

I have been a volunteer with Kitten Central for over 17 years. This is a fantastic group of people, fosters and hard workers, trying to save kittens, specializing in bottle babies. When they are of age , each one is spayed or neutered. If there is a mom cat, she will be fixed as well after she is finished nursing her babies. Everyone works very hard at caring for the kittens and fundraising to help out. This is a wonderful group of people.

I became aware of Kitten Central long ago and support them every year in many fund raisers. This isn't your normal feel-good group; this group saves baby's just hours old and goes through their mission effect with gusto saving as many that come their way. Spay, and Neuter is my belief and I'm so happy we have this. All counties should. In the Wintertime they have a fudge and basket sale to raise funds. They just did Christmas in July Black Cat? I bought several beautiful items! Our oldest son, Bobby and Antonnette have fostered kittens. Without this group, we would be hurting. Everyone needs to know about this awesome group! Thank you all who foster, volunteer, donate and adopt!1

I've been volunteering for Kitten Central for several years now. I started just helping out cleaning out cages and caring for the kittens, then I moved on to fostering, and I now I help with fundraisers and anything else that comes up. This is a nonprofit that is clearly run on the passion of good hearted people that just love animals. There is nothing these people wouldn't do to make life better for the kittens in our care. We take in babies (kittens) that would otherwise starve on their own or have to be put down by shelters that don't have the resources to care for them. It is incredibly fulfilling to watch these animals go from barely weighing 100g, needing round the clock care, to energetic, healthy, 2lb kittens ready for their new home.

Today I called their old foster mom for some advice and she was there for me with advice that helped.

I have been a volunteer with Kitten Central for 8 years, caring for Kittens that would not have had chance of life without them. The organization is very efficient and helpful and encouraging. I can always get an answer about my concerns fostering anytime, day or night. Katy Voelz is an amazing coordinator; I don't know how she does it all. The Vet tech staff is always helpful and encouraging. It's been a pleasure volunteering for them.

I don't know what I would have done without the help of Kitten Central after taking on the arduous task of humanely "cleaning up" a cat colony of 30 cats last summer. One cat gave birth on the night of the 4th of July underneath a commercial dumpster. Though I wasn't able to catch the mother of the kittens at that moment, I happened to have a small butterfly net which I used to pull the kittens to the front of the dumpster so I could get them out. That night, while people all over the USA were celebrating the birth of this country I was celebrating the arrival of 4 tiny kittens whose lives could have turned out very differently had it not been for my being there at the very moment the cat was giving birth and and the help of Kitten Central who took them in to care for them around the clock. These kittens, and many like them, owe their lives to Kitten Central and I my gratitude.

Kitten Central provides a life saving service for neonatal kittens in Placer County. Their program has been instrumental in allowing Placer County Animal Services to reduce unnecessary euthanasia of neonatal kittens and increase the the number of cats and kittens saved to a record breaking 95% in 2022. Their work ensures that fragile kittens don't stay in the shelter longer than necessary to allow the shelter to use their limited resources to help additional animals. After the kittens are raised, they return to the shelter for spay/neuter and adoption. We are truly blessed to have such an amazing partner in our community that provides this unique service. Wish their were more groups like them to help shelters!

Kitten Central is the absolute best. They provide exceptional services to animals and our community and are very easy to work with. They have been instrumental in changing our live release rate for cats at Placer County Animal Services from only 60% to nearly 94% for the past four years! We don't know how we would accomplish our mission without them. We cannot recommend them enough as they are one of the most professional and compassionate organizations that we work with. I had the opportunity to visit Kitten Central in person when I delivered surplus kitten formula from Berkeley Humane. What started as a small dedicated group of people willing to care for newborn kittens turned into the classic: Show Don't Tell. The new director of Placer County Animal Control was so impressed with their track record Kitten Central was given the contract for all newborns that came into the shelter with the goal of ZERO euthanasia for Placer. This is not the case in neighboring Yuba and Sutter counties. In addition, UC Davis also partnered with Kitten Central - what started as an experiment is fast becoming standard protocol: using incubators. Survival rates increase dramatically. I could go on and on about this wonderful organization. They are making a huge difference in how newborn kittens are treated.

Well it all started about 2006 for me. Oh BTW I'm the silly one that thought up this business plan. Kitten Central is not a rescue. We are a private non-profit veterinary hospital located in the beautiful Sierra Nevada Foothills. We specialize in neonate kittens 0-28 days old. Since our partnership with Placer County Animal Services, the county has reduced their neonate euthanasia rate to 0% for this county. We are so excited to be adding The City of Sacramento - Front Street Shelter in 2023. We will begin year 1 with accepting approximately 300 neonates next year, hiring more staff, building our new hospital in 2024, and the goal is to take 100% of neonates in The City of Sacramento by the end of 2024. Once Front Street is contracted and running smoothly, we will then reach out to The County of Sacramento @ Bradshaw and then both counties where I was born will be covered. It has taken us 14 years to get this far. Small steady growth because of our medical and administrative employees and I can't forget those medically trained amazing foster homes. Our program would not succeed with those those loving folks. Will try to remember to update this next year. In the mean time, WE ARE KITTEN CENTRAL!!

I was so honored to find Kitten Central. I had the opportunity to see first hand the dedication and care Penny and her volunteers give to the mama's and baby kittens in their care. I learned a great deal in the short time I actively participated. I bottle-fed kittens and took a couple fosters into my home. Health issues interfered with my active participation but I've supported them in other ways when possible. I highly recommend that if you read this and love kitties that you support them with your time, treasure or both. You won't regret it. The kittens need you!

After learning of Kitten Central of Placer County, I toured their facility and to say I was impressed doesn’t go far enough. The neonate speciality area pioneered by the founder, Penny Dougherty, for tiny babies with respiratory issues is amazing. Far and above, I cannot compliment the dedication of all the staff, volunteers, fosters and donors who have saved countless kittens who otherwise might not have survived, while also continuing to share the importance of spay and neuter to control needless overpopulation. They are my #1 charity. I encourage everyone on the fence to tour and support KOC.

I volunteered to foster with Kitten Central because I my own cat died and I wanted to do something to give back to the animal world. After two years, the experience has taught me so much. These little babies are so vulnerable and sometimes their stability can turn on a dime . What makes Kitten Central such a superior nonprofit is its community. Anytime I need support, someone to share a laugh with, or get added information, Kitten Central is geared to cover that. Their Facebook group shares the experience of raising these little guys and is wonderful resource for getting experienced support. I can't say enough about all the Vet Techs who help guide us through the journey as these babies grow and prepare for their furever home. They take an active interest in the litters I bring in no matter how many other litters they've seen that day. Additionally, these dedicated professionals are ready to help whenever I have hit a wall and am not sure what to do. My many questions are answered with care and never with condescension. This community is unique and the people who make it work are special beyond words. Such a rare group doing essential work for the poor, vulnerable kitten population.

Kitten Central cares for neonatal kittens. While our kittens are small, they often come with big issues which can be overwhelming. Kitten Central is exceptional for the support it provides its fosters. As a rookie, I would completely be in the woods if not for the expert support I have access to 24/7. In addition to the technical help, the entire foster community at Kitten Central defines the core of this organization. As a foster, you are never on your own, you have access to a group of experienced fosters who are ready to offer suggestions and provide moral support for the tasks of caring for these little guys. The caliber of foster members is second to none. I am so glad I joined this group and I am proud to say I am part of the Kitten Central Community.

Kitten Central of Placer County is an incredible organization with so much to offer the community’s most vulnerable feline friends. Kittens who are in need of critical healthcare, love, and safety come to Kitten Central and get top notch care! The emphasis is on neonatal kittens, which includes kittens who are younger than the legally adoptable age— some as young as just a few days old. These little ones need around-the-clock feeding, bathing, and extensive care, and Kitten Central’s network of fosters never ceases to amaze me. As a newer volunteer in the clinic and foster myself, I have learned so much from the knowledgeable and compassionate staff. All of the fosters are so wonderful and it is obvious that they truly love the kittens they care for. The veterinary staff works hard to ensure every kitten gets the best opportunity to thrive, and the feral mama cats get critical health services as well (if they are present). All around an amazing non-profit with a great community of volunteers and supporters.

I have been involved with Kitten Central for 5 years now. Initially I joined as a foster and one year ago I became Treasurer of the Board. This is an organization that is completely devoted to what they do. Kittens under 28 days of age require intensive care and treatment. Shelters often do not have the resources to provide this care. This is where Kitten Central steps in. They are extremely professional and each kitten is put through a thorough and complete medical protocol. The dedication, professionalism and devotion to their cause makes me proud to be a member of this organization!

Kitten Central is very well organized providing the necessary resources to reduce euthanasia rates of neonates, and decreasing the number of cats reproducing overall. This non profit organization is unique by the way medical care is provided to all fosters with kittens in their care, and by working closely with local veterinarians, and other rescues/shelters. We care for the tiniest of kittens - some only a day old. We feed them around the clock, tend to their medical needs, and treat them if they fall sick. We love and socialize them so they learn how to be playful, friendly pets in permanent homes, and cry when they go to those homes - and sign up again when kitten season comes each year. Kitten Central's volunteers are a dedicated bunch of people who save hundreds of kittens' lives every year, and keep coming back to provide care when kitten season starts up in the spring. Join us.

Terribly sick, tiny kittens, midnight feedings, skin ointment, eye drops, nose drops, oral medications four times a day, ringworm dips, teaching them to nurse, teaching them to use a litter box, teaching them to eat solid food, bathing them so they don't look like swamp monsters, and taking them to endless medical appointments at Kitten Central of Placer County. What a pain! Then they learn to steal bottle caps for toys, wrestle each other, climb and tumble off furniture, take their naps on your lap, purr right under your chin, and give you kitty kisses. What a joy! Then, at their most adorable, they go to be adopted into their forever families, and you know that they are charming and friendly and will have great lives. You mourn a little, and foster two litters next time. Kitten Central makes all this happen, and that's an important job to do.

I have volunteered as a foster and medical assistant at Kitten Central of Placer County for almost six years. I originally chose them because they specialized in caring for neonate kittens 0 to 28 days old, not only providing foster care but also all medical needs for kittens. Kitten Central works with local shelters and rescues to take in these tiny neonates and avoid the need for shelters to euthanize them simply for lack of resources. Over the six years I’ve been there Kitten Central has consistently and successfully continued to enhance the level of services and care we are able to provide these tiny beings. Next stop is the construction of a complete medical clinic to be able to offer an even higher level of care. It is truly a labor of love on the part of the Board of Directors, the staff, and the amazing and tireless fosters.

I have been a volunteer foster at Kitten Central for about 3 years. We don’t just foster kittens, we save the lives of critically ill neonate kittens who become amazing pets and family members. We only take in kittens between 0 and 28 days, and preemies, whose moms were killed or rejected the babies. These babies may come in looking fine, but the circumstances of their births often catch up with them and they can quickly become critically ill. The staff at Kitten Central using their knowledge and skills about the care of critically ill kittens care these tiny babies round-the-clock to give them every chance overcome their infirmities and thrive. This is a non-profit that helps shelters so more animals may be adopted and none are euthanized. Kitten Central is made up of volunteers who selflessly spend hours, days, weeks doing whatever needs to be done to educate about the importance of spay and neutering, to take care of the medical protocol for kittens who have been dumped, feral moms and kittens, and kittens left with shelters, and to socialize them so they may be returned to the shelters for a successful adoption. Kitten Central can’t save every kitten who comes through it’s doors but they sure try. As a foster mom and other ways I serve Kitten Central, I know firsthand how dedicated they are. Recently I’ve fostered a litter that got sick. It was 9:00 at night when I brought one kitten over to KC for medical emergency. It turned out that this kitten tested positive for deadly panleukopenia. Kitten Central’s vet tech Jillian Byerrum then followed me home to test the rest of the kittens. It was after 10:30 at night when she was finally finished. Yes, there was one more that was sick but because of they were medically proactive the others are almost ready for adoption.

Such caring, dedication and compassion for the neonate kittens saves lives that may otherwise have been snuffed out at an early age.

Kudos to Kitten Central! I love what you do and have been glad to contribute in many ways

I lost my cat whose name was Lolalita shortly after Christmas. My heart hurt and I missed her terribly. In April I began searching adds for a new kitten to love. While looking on line at different agencies I found Kitten Central in Placer County. They had just posted an invitation on line to attend a Kitten Fostering Class. I attended the class and was very excited about becoming a Foster Mom for some little kittens that had a disadvantage in their early lives that needed someone to care and love them. I learned that everyone who either worked there or volunteered there where wonderful people who all had the best interest of kittens and other felines and also loved doing it. At the class they had about 6 kittens for volunteers to interact with whose Mother had survived the Camp Fire in Paradise. About a week later I noticed that one of the kittens was at PetSmart in Auburn waiting for his adoption to a forever home. I took a drive on a whim, hoping he would still be there and told myself, if he was, it was meant to be. I walked in the door and he looked directly at me. Needless to say, I adopted him! His name is Elliott and he was named after a Street in Paradise. He was raised in a loving, safe home of one of the volunteers. He has a wonderful personality and we love him to the max. Shortly after adopting Elliott, I received a call from Penny Dougherty, the CEO of Kitten Central. She asked if I would like to foster three little kittens, who were 2 weeks old. It has been a fun 7 weeks and tomorrow they head off to Placer County Animal Services for Neuters sand Spay. This has been a very rewarding experience. I am happy to have made a difference in 3 little lives. I love Kitten Central and have met many friends along the way who I have much in common. I will continue to support and make a change in the lives of kittens who have a chance to survive and live in a home where they can give love back to the people who love them and take them to their forever homes. Kitten Central is an Excellent Nonprofit Organization!!! They go above and beyond.

My boyfriend and I have adopted 3 kittens that were fostered at Kitten Central and I have to say that as unique of a personality each kitten has, Kitten Central has been successful at producing well socialized, sweet kittens. One of the kittens that we adopted was diagnosed with FIP at 9 months old and I was absolutely heartbroken and did not know who to go to for support so I reached out to Kitten Central. Penny responded and she provided me with the emotional support that I needed and helped me through one of the hardest things that I had to do and that was to put down my kitten. :( I have never had to do anything like that before and it was difficult for me to come to terms with. This is coming from an Intensive Care Unit nurse who deals with death every day! Afterwards, Penny offered me a burial spot at Kitten Central so that my kitten could be buried next to her siblings near a beautiful pond. I'll forever be grateful and cannot thank Kitten Central enough for that. Kitten Central has gone above and beyond for my boyfriend and I. It is very obvious that the founder, Penny has a passion for saving kittens and has the compassion to assist those who are grieving from the loss of a kitten. Thank you so much!

I’ve been volunteering at Kitten Central for three years and through fluffy successes and tearful losses (more successes by far) I know that it’s exactly where I need to be. The skill, dedication, and caring shown by everyone connected with Kitten Central is astounding and inspiring. I’ve fostered kittens before but have never had access to the level of knowledge and training that happens here, and the quality of the care shows it. I’ve been involved in losses of some of my fosters, not surprising considering where some of these kittens come from, but the number of kittens that thrive and find their perfect homes is worth all the work. This group deserves all the support and recognition possible. They’re amazing - just ask some of their kitty graduates!

I have been volunteering with Kitten Central for two months now and am inspired every time I go in to help with cat care. It's a lot of hard non stop work for a very good cause for these helpless little animals. I've seen some amazing things and miracles happen with the awesome staff. The hard work and sleepless nights dedicated to save these babies. I also have adopted two kittens of my own and really enjoy making a difference in these little ones lives. Thank you Penny, Tiny and rest of you amazing miracle workers.

Kitten Central is a wonderful organization led by Penny who opens her home to help save these sweet kittens. I fostered for almost 6 years and enjoyed the visits to Kitten Central. Warning! Don't go there in mind to just look at the cute kittens! She will happily send a litter home with you if you go through her Foster training and she feels you will make a "good Foster Mom" and yes I failed and adopted "Holly Jolly" who enriched our lives.
Thank you Penny and staff for all you do!!! Gloria T.

We are a rescue group called Happy Tails which uses Kitten /central when we can't find a foster to do bottle babies we receive. They are absolutely great. They take that baby through all its trials & tribulations & return it to us when it has had everything done such as tested wormed treated for fleas first shots & spay or neuters, They are already to put up for adoption when we get them back. They have so many dedicated volunteers & have saved so many little lives.

I came to Kitten Central about 6 years ago looking for a forever friend, but stayed to become a volunteer after seeing all the good they did. Kitten Central has done so much for these poor kittens and it has been a pleasure to watch it grow into what it is today

Three years ago we adopted a brother and sister (runt) when KC was still fostering thru adoptable age. They have been wonderful, sociable companions to our 6 & 16 year olds and each a delight to us.
A tribute to KC's foster family.
KC knows what it is doing to save and give kind life starts to struggling orphans.
Please support them!

Penny and the rest of Kitten Central do God’s work. Saving hundreds of orphaned and sick kittens from day old to adoption ready. I am proud to say I’m a foster mom.

Kitten Central is amazing. They respond 24/7 to calls and will help where most other rescues won't.

I've been with KC for 3 years. I'm an avid dog lover but working with babies 2 oz or more is such a joy. I know human raised kittens are usually more loving. They know we love and nurture them and repay us 10 fold. The volunteers are exceptionally caring and dedicated lovers. Over 500 kittens passed thru our doors in 2017. Who knows what our results will be this year. Thank you for your support.

A neighbor dumped three kittens on my porch and Kitten Central were able to take them in and save two of the babies. They were wonderful, just wonderful and I wish I knew of them earlier. I will always be grateful they were able to help.

I volunteer here and am new but i tell you what this place is so needed. Without their help these poor babies would either die or be euthanized. Thank you kitten central

I'm fairly new to Kitten Central as a volunteer, board member and foster mom. I'm currently fostering my fourth litter with KC, which is my largest and most challenging litter to date. I got the call to foster sister mamas and their 13 babies who were brought into KC in very rough shape. After a month of endless medications, vet visits, and lots and lots of TLC, I'm happy to report that everyone is thriving and scheduled for their spay and neuters. It won't be long before this special family is ready for adoption at Placer County Animal Services. This is only one of many great stories about the volunteer work we all do. Please support this wonderful organization by helping us and the kittens, any way you can.
