Mission: Kfai is a volunteer-based community radio station that exists to broadcast information, arts, and entertainment programming for an audience of diverse racial, social and economic backgrounds. By providing a voice for people ignored or misrepresented by mainstream media, kfai increases understanding between peoples and communities, and fosters the values of democracy and social justice.
Programs: Programming/production: kfai provided in-depth coverage of local news and public affairs, and offered forums for discussion of community, regional, national and global issues. Kfai met the needs of diverse audiences by offering access to the airwaves to a multitude of individuals and communities, reaching out to african, african-american, asian-american, native american, and hispanic/latino populations. We broadcast programming in 10 languages, a feat other stations in the nation would be hard-pressed to match. Those languages included: amharic, english, french, hindi, hmong, oromo, somali, spanish, tigrigna, and vietnamese. Kfai broadcasts to one of the largest hmong communities in the nation with two separate programs. Its cedar-riverside neighborhood boasts the largest concentration of somali immigrants in the country. Kfai offered diverse opportunities for its listeners in 2017. Listeners could enjoy 88 weekly programs, including a multi-genre, host-programmed selection of musical interests that encompassed african, blues, caribbean, country, hip-hop, jazz, latin, pop, rhythm and blues, rock, roots, soul and zydeco. Kfai's arts, talk and public affairs programs were equally diverse, ranging from spoken word to political opinion, and short- and long-form documentaries. Those 88 programs engineered and hosted by over 110 board-certified volunteers, were broadcast 24 hours a day, seven days a week via kfai's programming streamed live on the station's website (www. Kfai. Org) and was available for on-demand listening for two weeks via its archive. Additionally, programs could be accessed via the station's mobile app, compatible for iphones, ipads and android devices. Kfai's eclectic format engages nearly every segment of the community: males, females, young, old, gay, straight, majority, minority, first nation, long-time residents and new immigrants, as well as persons with disabilities.
broadcasting: we trained more than 35 community members to be certified board operators with equipment and fcc regulations.
legacy arts & cultural heritage: fresh air, inc. (kfai) produced legacy arts & cultural heritage programming that provided independent producers opportunities to develop program content focused on minnesota's rich arts and culture. These programs were represented by "minneculture" (half-hour audio documentaries on historical and cultural topics) and "listening lounge" (a one hour documentary showcase). These productions were aired multiple times during kfai's morning drive time and two weekday evenings. Program content included perspectives and historical information from culturally and ethnically diverse people, organizations, businesses and communities. Over 150 segments were produced and distributed through ampers, a statewide network of 18 minnesota community, college and tribal radio stations.
