Mission: Jazz house kids transforms lives by helping students gain an artistic edge through music, mentoring, education and apprenticeship. We use jazz as an effective teaching tool to enhance academic achievement, build essential 21st century skills, and cultivate tomorrow's community leaders and global citizens.
Programs: Jazz house programs: at the jazz house facility in montclair, students ages 8 to 19 from 50 new jersey communities participate in year-round jazz ensemble and pre-college programs with jazz house kids professional teaching artists. Students receive from 40 to 155 hours of instruction and performance. Nearly 35% of students are offered greatly reduced, need-based tuition assistance. The chica power initiative significantly increases female participation in instrumental music ensembles at the jazz house. Since this all-girls program began in 2011, female participation has increased from 8% to 29% and continues to grow. Each year, 100% of high school seniors studying at the jazz house go on to attend college, with many receiving major scholarships.
montclair jazz festival: presented annually since 2010, the montclair jazz festival has grown to become new jersey's largest, free jazz festival with more than 10,000 attendees. Each august the nine-hour festival is presented at montclair's public nishuane park. The montclair jazz festival is one of the only jazz festivals in the nation that features internationally acclaimed jazz artists performing side-by-side with young, aspiring musicians. Each year every student who enrolls in the jazz house summer workshop is featured onstage at the festival. Headline artists have included vocalists dee dee bridgewater and jose james, pianists kenny barron and chuchito valdes, guitarist john scofield, clarinetists paquito d'rivera and anat cohen, and many other legendary jazz musicians.
in-school programs: jazz house kids music clubs provide free, weekly, in-school instruction for nearly 500 newark public middle and high school students, including students with special needs. Each student receives more than 80 hours of contact time, including small group lessons, ensemble rehearsals, school and community concerts, and master classes. In-school programs also are offered in elizabeth, orange and union.
