Mission: To alleviate poverty in garbage dump communities across the globe and raise awareness about the living conditions of the severely poor in developing countries.
Results: For 15 years, IS has been building schools, nurseries, homes, medical facilities, community centers, adult training schools and funding microloan and food programs in garbage dump communities. We also conduct relief programs, such as the emergency food and school building programs we are currently managing in Haiti.
Target demographics: Tens of thousands of families live in garbage dump communities around the world - 40,000 people live in the Cairo, Egypt dump alone. They make a meager living collecting recyclables from the dump and live in dwellings that are often made of cardboard, tin and other trash. We serve these families, with an emphasis on nourishing and educating the children of garbage dump dwellers.
Direct beneficiaries per year: We serve approximately 10,000 people annually.
Programs: Paso a paso (step by step) program. Step by step gives coll school alumni the opportunity to pursue an education beyond sixth grade in a country were graduating the sixth grade is a major accomplishment.
