Mission: The international institute of akron (iia) is a non-profit agency that provides services to the foreign-born in akron and the summit county, ohio community. Iia's mission is to contribute to the well being of our community by creating and implementing programs and services to assist the foreign-born to integrate into our society, promoting public awareness of the value of ethnic diversity and encouraging international communication.
Programs: Refugee resettlement: 350 refugees were resettled to the akron area in 2017. This is the largest number in the agency's history. This program provides comprehensive services for refugees, asylees, victims of trafficking and secondary refugees who relocate from other u. S. States. The primary goal is to help individuals acquire a working knowledge of the english language, gain employment and achieve self-sufficiency as they adjust to their new life in akron, ohio.
employment: iia provides comprehensive employment counseling and advisory services to support the integration and self-sufficiency of immigrants and refugees in greater akron and northeast ohio. Services include individualized employment case management and skill assessment, development of a family self-sufficiency contract and budget, orientation to the world of work and u. S. Workplace understanding, job clubs, and targeted esol and skill development. Additional services include helping clients overcome key employment barriers such as transportation and childcare. The iia employment services team has also established relationships with over 60 employers in the northeast ohio region to support talent recruitment and development. In 2017, 90% of refugee clients are employed and self-sufficient within 180 days of arrival. Iia's employment programs are funded through state and federal contracts.
interpreting and translation services: interpreting, translation and cultural competency services are offered to assist immigrants, refugees, and service providers in the greater akron area to overcome language and cultural barriers in communication. 11,378 hours of translation services were provided in 2017.
