Mission: International house fosters global cross-cultural exchange, respect and appreciation through a variety of programs and services.
Programs: Classes and events:international house davis held 21 ongoing, year long language conversation classes in over 10 different languages. These classes were offered on a drop in basis with an estimated 210 students each week. A new program of language instruction classes began in january 2017. These classes offer 10 week sessions which allow students to progress as a cohort. Participants in classes included students and scholars from uc davis, their families, as well as local residents intending to improve their speaking or writing skills. In addition, i-house offered movement classes featuring different exercise and arts traditions from around the world such a yoga, capoeira, tango, and salsa. Along with these regularly held classes, i-house held many workshops and events such as international cooking classes, international wine tasting,culture nights showcasing different countries, and arts & crafts demonstrations. Several dinners were held including a traditional american thankgiving dinner and a nowruz persian new year celebration. Children's international storytelling brought storytellers in many traditions to share their stories with children. The connections program is a weekly program drawing an average of 30 participants per week which has been welcoming international visitors and scholars to davis, as well as their families, for several decades. The international friendship program connected international visitors and local residents for cross cultural interaction and exchange. Monthly art exhibits feature local and international artists.
fulbright scholars:the purpose of the san francisco/bay area fulbright visiting scholar enrichment program is to bring visiting scholars together around activities and events that will enable them to make connections and build networks with other scholars, both international and american, and with participants in other fulbright programs. The goal of the sf/ba fvs program is to enhance and round out the fulbright scholar experience and to build cultural understanding. The sf/ba fvs advisory committee plans events for each month which will be interesting to the scholars and inform them of issues and concerns that are particular to the bay area, california, and the united states. Scholars are included as speakers whenever possible and all activities encourage discussion and interaction that will bring greater clarity to a subject.
international festival:international festival davis is an annual showcase and festival put on by international house davis on the first sunday in october. This program invites local cultural organizations, schools, and residents to create displays and an interactive booth to share a particular culture or region with the broader community. These culture booths teach attendees about cuisine, language, traditional dress, crafts, popular culture, history, and more. Each year about 20-30 cultures are represented. We also invite arts and craft vendors and food vendors with a preference for those which represent different cultural traditions and backgrounds. Two stages feature local musicians and dancers representing many different styles of music, dance, and performance from around the globe. Each year, this program attracts between 3,000 and 5,000 attendees from throughout our region and furthers our mission of global cross-cultural exchange, respect, and appreciaiton.
