Mission: The institute for policy studies (the institute) is a 55-year-old organization that transforms ideas into action for peace, justice and the environment. The institute's researchers strengthen social movements with independent research, visionary thinking, and links to the grassroots, scholars, and elected officials. The institute empowers people to build healthy and democratic communities locally, in the united states, and in the world. Combining research, advocacy, education, and organizing, the institute works across disciplines, bringing together creative minds from varied backgrounds to provide information, analysis, and action for social change.
Programs: New economy: the institute has been a leader in strengthening citizen responses to the global economy through research, writing, film, education, and coalition building. The project has produced dozens of books, articles, films, and educational materials.
common security: the institute developed and promoted an alternative approach to setting national security priorities with its unified security budget and climate security budgets. The institute's recommendations emphasized non-military solutions to the core security challenges of climate change, global poverty, terrorism and regional wars. The institute took this conversation to the local level by educating locally elected officials about this approach and helping them to start dialogues in their communities about these issues. Numerous reports and a book on the war in afghanistan were also produced.
affiliate: the economic hardship reporting project:the economic hardship reporting project (ehrp) is a fiscally-sponsored project of the institute devoted to immersive journalism about economic struggle. Ehrp supports articles, photography, audio and video, and seeks to commission pieces from journalists who are financially on the edge and can speak from their experience. New economy working group:the institute helped found this coalition to put forward a bold vision and implementation strategy for a new economy that works for people and the living systems on which their well-being depends. The new economy working group is now housed at the next systems project. New england new economy transition:new england new economy transition is based in the boston office of the institute. The project works to spread the word about the new economy movement and support community and regional resilience.
