Mission: The indianapolis press club foundation, inc. (ipcf) engages in activities to promote excellence in and public appreciation for journalism in indiana. Ipcfs activities include, but are not limited to scholarships, paid fellowships and awards for indiana college students.
Programs: The scholarship programs consist of various scholarships and awards. Some of these are named after individuals who were involved in or cared about journalism in indianapolis and indiana. Winners of these awards are selected by the ipcf scholarship committee based on several criteria. 1) in 2015, the indiana press club foundation board added paid summer fellowships - for indiana college journalism students - to its program. The 10-week fellowships pay $6,000 each and provide solid journalism experience at indianapolis area news services and/or tv and radio stations. Summer fellows work 40 hours per week. The foundation seeks to partner with a variety of local media groups and will rotate selections as part of its ongoing commitment to provide paid fellowships at indiana media organizations. 2) started in 2014 and in partnership with the indianapolis motor speedway, the foundation awards cash prizes for news, features and sports writing. The awards are handed out at the foundations last row party, which raises funds to support scholarships for indiana students interested in a career in journalism or communications.
the keating program is an annual daylong writing contest named in memory of legendary indianapolis star columnist thomas r. Keating. The competition features 10 finalists, representing indianas best college journalism students. Later that evening, there is an award dinner with a guest speaker and the top three winners are announced. Starting in 2015, the $100 that each of the 10 finalists receives come from funds collected in memory of lawrence bo connor who died in february 2014. Connor was a former foundation board member and former city editor and managing editor of the indianapolis star.
