Mission: To improve health and advance education for the indiana latino community through statewide advocacy, research and culturally responsive programs.
Programs: See schedule oili strives to not only improve the high school graduation rates for latino students but works to expand the population of latino college graduates in indiana by helping latino students to navigate the enrollment process and by being a resource for helping these students to graduate from college. Offered education programming includes the following initiatives:1)increasing college accessadvocacy ili works to inform community leaders and elected officials about the challenges and opportunities that exist for college bound latino hoosiers. Ili has secured partnerships with high schools, colleges, and community organizations to present information about the challenges and opportunities that exist for latino students. We also create movements and inform the public about initiatives at the grassroots level. College preparation workshops & presentations ili presents information to students and parents about college readiness, scholarships, financial aid, summer jobs and community service. We also host the latino education summit where we provide information to students and advocates on specific strategies to get more latino students to and through college. Women reaching higherthis program provides latina mothers with skills to become independent. Skills taught include resume, interview, and financial literacy trainings with the intent of providing guidance towards attaining vocational or college courses. 2)college retentioncollege coachingili works with students to assess student and family needs, address barriers and identify and focus on strengths. We help students navigate college procedures, financing, career exploration, testing, admissions, and referrals to general social service agencies for other needs. Peer2peer stem tutoring (science, technology, engineering, & mathematics)high school and college students work one on one with peers that are skilled in math and science. For their time, the stem tutors receive a scholarship. 3)professional developmentjob fair hundreds attend the job fair where students can learn more about career options and seek employment to ensure they can financially support their education endeavors. Ili summer internship programili secures 20 community partners to host 20 interns over the summer. The internship includes real world experience as well as assistance from ili staff who guide students to perform resume building and career research projects. Ili provides interns with a scholarship for their internship service. 4)scholarshipsili scholarshipsili awards about 20 needs-based scholarships to students who show academic excellence and community service involvement. Preference is given to applicants who are latino first generation college students. Ili leader scholarships after completing the summer internship program, select students are eligible to intern at the ili office, providing support to all programing and staff at ili. Scholarships are provided upon completion of service hours. Healthili is committed to improving the health of latinos through reducing health disparities among latinos throughout the state of indiana. Health-focused programming includes, but is not limited to, the following:5)health educationhost annual indiana latino health summit focused on creating system change within healthcare systems and organizations. Provide trainings and workshops for health providers, professionals, and advocates to better serve the latino population including cultural competence and social determinants of health topic. Participate in research studies focused on removing barriers in care to improve health access, quality, and cost. Connect youth and adults to available providers, prevention programs, and conferences linked to physical activity and healthier lifestyles. 6)tobacco cessation and preventiondecrease youth and adult smoking rates through integration of indiana tobacco quitline services in the preferred network consisting of latino providers, businesses, and organizations. Increase proportion of hoosiers not exposed to second hand smoke by educating on comprehensive smoke-free air policies in businesses, restaurants, housing properties, and school campuses. 7)hiv prevention and educationlinkage to care (l2c) program which links latinos out of hiv care to free comprehensive hiv care coordinationeliminate individual challenges by providing document preparation, transportation, child care providers, and medication reminders.
