What makes ILP stand out in achieving its objective is the holistic and realistic approach they have adopted in making quality education a reality in Government schools. Their attempt to bridging the gap in literacy standard in rural India is laudable as it takes enormous efforts to build the understanding of rural community towards quality education. Their intent and vision is foresighted, their method is effective and peer reviewed and their education model is unlike any other. I wish and hope that their efforts and ambitions reach greater heights and they are able to achieve 100% literacy level in Government schools.
I have had the wonderful opportunity of volunteering for India Literacy Project and it has been one of the most heart warming experiences of my life. The entire team at ILP is passionate, determined and driven towards making a difference in every individual’s life. Each day you can see the children growing and benefiting from the initiatives taken up by India Literacy Project. The team puts their heart and soul into coming up with new and exciting ways for the children to learn. There have been so many instances where one of the team members was explaining to me how the students will be learning a particular topic and I was caught wishing “why didn’t I get to learn it this way in school?”
It is not just the children, but the volunteers too who experience an impact in their lives when they are involved with ILP. It enriches you in so many different ways!
I volunteered for the summer camp and taught Art and Craft. Every student brought in the maximum enthusiasm and enjoyed whatever it was that was taught to them. Towards the end of the summer camp the students had learnt art and craft, but I had learnt so much more from them - they taught me the importance of valuing the little things in life and made me more compassionate. They also showed me that all one needs to change this world is a big heart and the belief in numerous possibilities!
I urge everyone to contribute and volunteer with ILP, they have the most compassionate and hard working team and it is bound to make a difference in your life, just as it did in mine!
ILP does an incredible job connecting interested volunteers with schools that need their help the most. Volunteers have the opportunity to assist in whatever area they feel most passionate about, from teaching students of all different ages to helping with administrative work. When I was in the 11th grade, I had the opportunity to teach a class of 6th grade students in mathematics and English in Hyderabad, and learned so much from that experience. With the guidance of ILP, I developed my own curriculum to teach the students with for the month that I would be working with them, and had an ILP service member come to the school with me for the first three days to show me how to best communicate with the students. This process not only ensured that the children had the best learning experience, but also taught me how to teach such a large group of kids. I was given full control of the class, and was able to see after one month that my work had truly impacted these children. This was an unforgettable experience and I will be sure to return when I get the chance.
