Mission: The organization's primary exempt purpose is to provide free or low-cost legal services to low-income families and individuals in the virginia cities of richmond and charlottesville and certain counties surrounding charlottesville who do not qualify for legal aid programs but who can not afford to hire a private attorney and who meet specified income eligibility requirements. - the church hill office located in richmond, virginia, provides, for a $50 legal fee, legal representation for uncontested divorces, guardianship and housing problems to low-income residents of the city of richmond. This office also provides free counseling for family law, housing, and guardianship matters without limitation to place of residence. - the pro bono partnership with the university of virginia school of law is located in charlottesville, virginia, and for area residents provides free legal representation to victims of domestic violence and to individuals with immigration relief needs.
Programs: In richmond's church hill pro bono office, 66 lawyers devoted over 1,792 hours to assisting 462 clients with family law, housing law, and guardianship needs through legal representation or free general consultation. The women's advocacy project (wap) provided legal representation to victims of domestic violence who are referred from local shelters, central virginia legal aid society, and the city of richmond and henrico county. This project is entirely staffed by hunton & williams lawyers who help abused women gain control of their lives by providing legal representation in connection with protective orders. (grants: $0)
in charlottesville's pro bono office in partnership with the university of virginia law school, 10 lawyers devoted over 1,877 hours to representing 83 clients with domestic violence, custody, and immigration relief needs and gave legal consultation to 46 individuals. In addition, the 9 law student volunteers working in the charlottesville office gained valuable training and practical experience, working with our volunteer lawyers. (grants: $0)
