Programs: Casework and defender support: hric works with human rights defenders who are raising systemic rights issues such as: corruption, censorship and surveillance, land expropriation and evictions, environmental degradation, and crackdowns on ethnic groups. Hric works to support this citizen activism by increasing access to information, bringing international attention to domestic calls for action, providing legal assistance and media support for individual cases, and offering training and resources for defenders.
communications, media: hric's media work supports domestic forces for change and advances international awareness of cases and systemic issues to promote results-oriented actions. Through press releases, statements, case updates, videos and podcasts, and a daily aggregation of news and resources, hric contributes to international understanding of the complex challenges facing rights defenders in china. Hric also produces bilingual and chinese-language journals, as well as books and reports aimed at diverse readerships. These publications provide uncensored platforms for domestic voices pressing for reform, greater official accountability, and rule of law; inform the international community on critical human rights-related issues and developments inside china; deepen the public's understanding of these issues and developments; and advance informed domestic and international discussions.
policy advocacy and research: hric's policy work aims at advancing domestic implementation of china's international human rights obligations and building international awareness of and support for key cases and issues critical to fostering a diverse and active civil society space in china. To accomplish these goals, hric monitors china's legal, political, and technological developments, conducts in-depth research, and engages international policy communities including individual governments, the private sector, academics and experts, and united nations bodies.
