Mission: Houston center for literacy strengthens providers of adult education who, in turn, provide necessary skills for underemployed citizens to fulfill their potential and become economically self sufficient. Hcl envisions a city where every adult is equipped with the basic skills they need to qualify for jobs that will allow them to support their families and thrive as prosperous, independent, successful members of society.
Programs: The houston center for literacy helps to increase houston's literacy landscape by promoting economic self-sufficiency. Hcl's job is to strengthen literacy provider organizations which in turn offer courses in adult education, english as a second language, health literacy, workforce literacy, and financial literacy. 15 americorps members served at 13 houston literacy organizations, teaching & tutoring to 1,214 adults in 2016/2017. Additional services/programs:211 literacy help line: hcl in collaboration with united way through 211 help line, links potential students and volunteers to literacy programs, either at one of hcls demonstration learning centers or at one of the 70+ houston literacy providers' sites. 211 help line's attendants and hcl staff follow up with callers to ensure they have found a learning center that meets their needs and determine if further referrals are necessary. The 211 literacy help line processed 1,602 calls this year. Hcl piloted a texas workforce commission site-based program for english@work where literacy educators work with non-english speakers at their place of employment. During the pilot period 764 employee-students at 27 employer work-sites participated and improved their english fluency.
