Mission: The housatonic community college foundation is a unique and vital resource that works to support the mission of housatonic community college. The foundation was established in 1990 when a small but dedicated group of citizens from the region joined together to raise funds to assist local students. Today, the foundation works in partnership with the college to bring a broad range of scholarships and grants to men and women from the greater bridgeport area who have the desire to learn and the determination to build a better life. Housatonic community college continues to thrive in its role as a dynamic and supportive academic institution. As the college has grown, so has the foundation. We strive to develop new sources of funding in an effort to meet the growing financial challenges presented by a thriving community college dedicated to educational access and success. Our fundraising efforts support scholarships, tuition assistance, tutoring, childcare and textbooks for students. We also
Programs: Each semester, the hcc foundation awards scholarships to a wide range of students in recognition of their outstanding academic performance and/or their financial need. Where 60 percent of hcc's students qualify for financial aid and 90 percent of students in the hcc foundation scholarship program meet intake guidelines for financial need, the scholarship program is a vitally needed resource.
student success program: the family economic security program in partnership with fairfield countys community foundation, this is an award-winning program designed to provide wrap around services for 400 head of household students to ensure their academic success and vocational training. The program has an 86% retention rate. Bridges - developed several years ago, hcc's bridges program is an achieving the dream initiative designed to forge strong partnerships with 17 area high schools in an effort to close the gap between high school preparation and college expectations and to help students make a seamless transition from high school to college. For the program's primary and secondary populations, approximately 50% are eligible for fall grants and 70% are minority. Career services - an integral part of student services at hcc, career services helps students with all aspects of developing their professional goals. Available to the entire student body of over 6,000 students, the hcc career center offers the most up-to-date tools in helping students discover their skills and their interests and transfer these into productive and satisfying work environments. All hcc staff will receive training in student advising, so they can direct students to the best resource, saving time and money. The early childhood laboratory school (ecls) - ecls provides a nationally accredited preschool program for 3, 4 and 5 year-old children of students, staff, faculty and the community. Ecls serves as a laboratory setting and a resource for students in the program and other disciplines in the college and professionals in the community. Imath and ienglish - hcc is working to resolve the high rate of students placing in developmental mathematics and english courses. The imath and ienglish programs accelerate students out of developmental courses at a faster rate while concurrently helping some students completely test out of developmental courses and enroll directly into college-level mathematics and english drop-in math - the drop-in math center, providing highly accessible math tutoring on a consistent basis, is located on the hcc campus in a classroom dedicated specifically for the program and offer math tutoring to any student who walks in, for any math level (developmental and college level) with no appointment necessary.
the housatonic museum of art (hma) is home to one of the premier community college art collections in the united states. Through its mission as a city-based campus museum, hma has three main focus areas: exhibitions, education and conservation. This permanent collection is on continuous display throughout the 300,000 square foot facility, offering over 6,000 students and over 10,000 annual visitors to view and interact with the art on a daily basis. The art collection is owned and maintained by the college, the foundation receives contributions to support hma.
