Mission: Alliance for Community Empowerment’s sole mandate is to assist the underserved. Alliance for Community Empowerment concentrates its efforts and resources on identifying and eliminating the causes of poverty rather than only dealing with its effects. Alliance for Community Empowerment’s actions are directed towards promoting appropriate institutional change and enabling the underserved to become self-sufficient contributors to society.
Results: Alliance for Community Empowerment, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit agency was designed as the anti-poverty agency for the Greater Bridgeport Area in September of 1964 by the Office of Economic Opportunity. Today, the Alliance aims to work with people toward the eradication of the “paradox of poverty in the midst of plenty in this nation.” Alliance for Community Empowerment serves more than 35,000 individuals annually through its broad range of services in a eight-town area, covering Bridgeport, Easton, Fairfield, Monroe, Norwalk, Stratford, Trumbull, and Westport, Connecticut.
Programs: Early Learning We believe EVERY child deserves a head start. With Alliance’s Early Learning program, you can begin your child’s educational success with one of our 14 early learning sites throughout the greater Bridgeport, Trumbull, and Stratford areas. Classrooms provide meals and snacks, educated teachers, and high-quality learning. We have a low-cost sliding scale, offer full and part-day services, and accept children between the ages of 6 weeks to 5 years old. At Alliance, we are inclusive of all children including those with special needs and/or disabilities Energy Assistance For CT families in need of energy assistance, Alliance For Community Empowerment can help obtain necessary energy services for those in need. From furnace repair, gas bill forgiveness plans, and water and sewage bill assistance, we have a comprehensive set of services and a team of expert case workers to fulfill your needs. Wherever you are in Connecticut, Alliance For Community Empowerment can provide our set of services to your family with just one application Supportive Services To ensure members of the Bridgeport community and surrounding towns receive the best possible support for greater self-sufficiency, Alliance For Community Empowerment offers a number of supportive services. Appropriately named Self-Sufficiency Supportive Services, this department provides comprehensive long-term individual and family development support services on a walk-in basis. An initial screening is done for a client’s needs through a pre-assessment questionnaire. If needs are identified, we offer case management services from a well-qualified and trained staff. As a provider of supportive care in the area for over 50 years, we have a number of support services including but not limited to: • Mortgage Assistance • Long Term Case Management • DSS Applications • Clothing and Food Referrals • 211 Infoline • Emergency Rental/ Utility Assistance • Child Care Referrals • G.E.D. Classes • Job Search Assistance • Employment Training • Life Skills Training • Community Resource Referrals • Household Budgeting • Food Stamps • Husky • Emergency Supports Youth Services Students are given a light supper. The Lighthouse Program assists students with homework (45 minutes mandatory) and offers a variety of activities for the children including: Arts & Crafts, Soccer, Chess, and Dance/Music. Other activities include Tennis Training which culminates with a Tennis Tournament, under the direction of the United States Tennis Association (USTA), Lacrosse, Ice Skating (Wonderland of Ice), Swimming and Family Literacy Nights.
